![]() Two of the Premier League’s top teams will face a year in the Championship after they were found guilty of match fixing. An FA report into the matter, was released to the media this morning, it contained detailed accounts of a sting set up by the FA to stop what they say is a huge problem in the sport. The report was damning in its portrayal of incidents involving coaches and players from both teams, with Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger, a main player in the scandal. Needless to say Mr Wenger has been sacked by the Arsenal board and faces a life ban from coaching in Europe, a ban in England already in place for the disgraced Frenchman. Due to ongoing investigations into the matter, players involved in the bust have not been named, but the FA is adamant these players would all face hefty fines, with some even looking at prison terms, with the matter handed over to English police. Arsenal and Man City fans took to the streets on hearing the news, with many heading to their clubs headquarters demanding answers. Arsenal’s latest signing Samir Nasri is said to be looking to break his contract with the club, a reaction we expect many of the Arsenal and Man City players to take in the next few days with a number of Premier League clubs already showing interest in the limitless amount of talent both sides have to offer. Arsenal will now look for a new manager, before a season that will be tough for the club. The prospect for both sides facing a year in the championship, not only hurting the club’s record, but also their bank balance, with sponsorship and television deals almost certainly being withdrawn in the next few days. The news coming as a shock to some but great news for Derby County and Birmingham who will get a second shot in the Premier League this season along with Coventry City, Watford and Southampton, the three teams promoted from the Championship. Wigan Athletic the other team to be relegated finishing last in last seasons Premier League and facing a battle to make it back into the top division. If Arsenal and Manchester manager to hang on to a number of players for the season ahead, expect an easy run in the Championship with next to no competition for the two teams other than each other. This should see both teams back in the Premier League next season, but this is football and stranger things have happened . Disgraced Arsene Wenger faces a ban from the sport he loves

![]() Harry Redknapp has named his son Jamie as his assistant for the season ahead, after Tony Adams was revealed as Arsenal’s new manager yesterday. Adam’s is an Arsenal legend spending his whole playing career at the club, signing for the Gunners as a school boy in 1980. The appointment was well received by Arsenal’s members, who will welcome Adams back to the club officially next week, throwing a black tie dinner for the new manager. Adams was well known for his battle with alcoholism during his career, his recovery was in part due to the disgraced Arsene Wenger who stood by Adams and assisted in helping him through the rehabilitation process. Adams has since founded the Sporting Chance Clinic, a charitable foundation aimed at providing treatment, counseling and support for sports men and women suffering from drink, drug or gambling addictions. Adams had a managerial stint at Wycombe Wanderers where he was unable to prevent the team’s relegation to league two and resigned in November 2004 citing personal reasons. Short stints as a trainee coach with Dutch clubs Feyenoord and FC Utrecht lead to being appointed assistant manager of Portsmouth under Redknapp. In his first season with Portsmouth the club finished ninth in the premier league, the highest ranked finish for the club since the 50’s. Last season the club went one better finishing 8th and winning the F.A Cup, which gave them a birth in this season’s UEFA Cup. Redknapp admitting the club owed a lot of their success to Adams’ and his ability to get the players to give 110%. Adams’ successor Jamie Redknapp, best known for his playing stint with Liverpool and his marriage to Eternal singer Louise Nurding was linked to the assistant managers position at Chelsea last season. A role he turned down in favour of continuing, a career in television. His appointment as assistant of Portsmouth comes as a surprise, with a history of not seeing eye to eye with his father well publicised by different media outlets. Harry has said the two have sorted out their differences and are looking forward to working together, hopefully bringing back some silverware for Portsmouth in the process. Arsenal legend Tony Adams now in charge of the London Club Can father and son work together at Portsmouth |

![]() Redknapp to Focus on Midfield and Defence. With another 2 months left in the summer transfer window, Harry Redknapp will focus on finding a replacement for Sulley Muntari, who’s move to Inter Milan leaves a big hole in midfield for Pompey. Muntari was an instrumental part of Portsmouth’s 07-08 season which saw them finish 8th and win the FA Cup, an achievement they hope to improve on this season. Speculation over Muntari’s likely replacement have led to names like ex Liverpool midfielder Mohamed Sissoko, Udinese’s Christian Obodo and HSV’s Nigel de Jong all being linked with a move to the club. The three players all sharing a similar playing style to Muntari and well within Redknapp’s budget, with chairman Alexandre Gaidamak giving the green light for Redknapp to spend big in the summer transfer window. Redknapp is almost certain to sign a new keeper with the ageing David James thinking of retirement this year and the prospects of facing top European clubs with Jamie Ashdown, a concern for Portsmouth who may release the keeper before the start of the season. Favoured to take his spot is Wigan keeper Chris Kirkland, who is looking to escape a year in the Championship after Wigan was relegated last season. Redknapp also enquiring about Manchester City keeper Joe Hart, but being told firmly he is not for sale. A certain addition to the Portsmouth line-up will be Peter Whittingham, the Cardiff City winger impressing Redknapp in last season’s FA Cup final so much, Redknapp was said to of called Cardiff City manager Dave Jones the week after to discuss the move. Whittingham should join the club next week, with the club officials in the last stages of negotiation as you read this. In defence, Redknapp has shown interest in recently club-less Argentine legend Juan Pablo Sorin. Sorin has been quoted as saying he wants one last swan song before retiring and with Portsmouth in the UEFA Cup, the club may just be what he is looking for. With the ability to play almost anywhere on the field, Sorin will not only bring his great technical skill to the club but also great leadership qualities that Portsmouth may need if rumours surrounding Sol Campbell’s departure from the club are true. Along with the rumours surrounding Campbell’s departure and as we mentoned before Jamie Ashdown’s imminent release from the club, Redknapp may use the summer transfer window to unload a number of ageing squad members including Noe Paromot, Hermann Hreidarsson and Richard Hughes. Peter Whittingham set to join Pompeywithin the next week. Juan Pablo Sorin on Redknapps list of targets this summer Last edited by JDefoe14; 20-08-2008 at 05:55 AM.. |

![]() POMPEY TO TOUR GREECE AND TURKEY Jamie Redknapp will partake in his first duty as assistant manager, taking Portsmouth on a tour of Greece and Turkey, where they will face tough opposition in the form of AEK Athens, Olympiakos, Galatasaray and Fernabache. Pompey’s assistant manager will be left to his own devices as manager Harry Redknapp deals with transfers back in England. The tour will be a tough examination of the managerial skills Jamie has, with the games all tipped to be nail biting encounters. The fanatical support the Greek and Turkish fans have for their teams will indeed play a huge part in the matches, as well as the extremely humid conditions that are expected to play havoc with the teams preparations and stamina during the match. The games will be good preparation for Portsmouth’s season ahead which include it’s first birth in European football. Their season starting on the 3rd of August with the Community Shield match against Manchester United. Followed by the club’s opening game of the Premier League season against Bolton at Fratton Park. Portsmouth will fly out to Greece in two weeks, enough time for Harry Redknapp to add a few players to the squad with rumours that he is on the verge of making a number of changes to the team. |

![]() The rumours surrounding Harry Redknapp’s major transfer spree seem to be materialising before our eyes, with a number of players in and out of the club, a week prior to Pompey’s tour of Greece and Turkey. A total of 8 changes were made with 4 players transferred in and 4 players out off the club in what can only be described as a major tactical move by Redknapp, giving his team an added boost before what will be a torrid tour of the two countries. Redknapp’s signing of Peter Whittingham comes as no surprise, with rumours surrounding the move going as far back as two weeks after the FA Cup final, where Whittingham played on the opposing team in Cardiff City. Whittingham is no stranger to the Premier League, playing 66 games for Aston Villa. In 2007 he had become surplus to the requirements of Aston Villa manager Martin O’Neill and was transferred to Cardiff, who signed Whittingham at a steal of just £350,000. Whittingham quickly establishd himself at Cardiff and was a major contributor in getting the team to the FA Cup final, scoring 3 goals in the road to the final against Chasetown, Wolverhampton and Middlesbrough. He played 60 games for Cardiff scoring 9 goals and is known for being a tactical thinker on the pitch with a fierce shot from the left side of the field. Cardiff made a good profit off the transfer, with Portsmouth paying 10 times what the Welsh club did just a year ago handing over £3.5m for the winger. Argentine great, Juan Pablo Sorin has joined the Portsmouth on a free transfer after he was released by German club, HSV. Sorin has played for some of the great clubs of Europe and will play a integral part in Pompey’s European campaign. Known for his versatility on the pitch and he’s some what eccentric style of play, Sorin will add a new dimension to Pompey. Expect him to push forward in search of goals and bring the flash Argentine style of play to the English club along with his leadership qualities that were evident in the 2006 world cup where he led Argentina into the quarter finals of the tournament. Once regarded as one of the best keepers in England, times have been tough for Chris Kirkland. Injury has played a major role in his disappointing career and he will be looking to turn that around at Portsmouth. At just 20 years old Kirkland was the most expensive goalkeeper in British transfer history, signing with Liverpool for £6m. Kirkland was tipped to be Liverpool and England’s new number one at the beginning of the 2004-05 season but poor performances caused by injury meant he slipped down the goalkeeper order behind Jerzy Dudek and Scott Carson at the Reds. In 2005 Kirkland went on loan to Wet Bromwich Albion where once again injury kept him out of the number one jersey, losing out this time to Tomasz Kuszczak. A loan deal with Wigan became permanent on the 27th of October 2006, Kirkland managing to keep relatively injury free at the club and despite a good season in goals last season, faced relegation with Wigan who failed in the attack department for the season. Kirkland will be used in rotation with David James at Portsmouth with the view of eventually taking over from James, who has already discussed the possibility of retirement at the end of the season. Seen as a replacement for Sulley Muntari, Christian Obodo partnered Muntari in their days at Udinese before Muntari was signed by Portsmouth. Obodo is rated as one of the best players to come out of Nigeria and has made a reputation for himself in the Serie A, playing for Perugia, Fiorentina and Udinese. He is an imposing mid-fielder, both strong in attack and defence and will do a good job in replacing his friend Muntari at the club. Udinese were well compinsated for Obodo with a rumoured £7.5m exchanging hands that could rise to £9m depending on appearances and performance for the club. The players transferred out off the club were defenders Hermann Heidrasson and Noe Paromot midfielder Richard Hughes and goalkeeper Jamie Ashdown. The club wishes these players the best in their future with their chosen clubs. Peter Whittingham Juan Pablo Sorin Chris Kirkland Christian Obodo
