![]() Speculation on the future of Sol Campbell and David Nugent has risen after the pair remained in England, while Portsmouth team mates left for their tour of Greece and Turkey. Rumours surrounding Campbell have been circulating since the end of last season with interest from Spanish club Valencia and a number of English clubs, also chasing the defender. David Nugent had a disappointing season in 2007 and with the signing of Peter Crouch, Nugent may be seen as surplus to the club’s needs. Despite his poor form Nugent will demand a transfer fee of around £9m to £12 if rumours surrounding the pair are true. In other transfer news Liverpool has completed the signing of Gareth Barry. Barry was the main target of Rafa Benitez this summer and with the signing it seems Liverpool’s transfer season is almost complete. Sir Alex Ferguson finally had the pleasure of welcoming Dimitar Berbaov to the club after lengthy dealings with Tottenham finally resulted, in a deal that saw Louis Saha join the North London club with another £22m in compensation for the loss of yet another striker this summer. Man Utd have also announced that Angolan striker, Manucho has finally managed to obtain a working permit, giving United a strong attack this season with Frazier Campbell also being named in the first team. Meanwhile Middlesbrough have signed a replacement for Mark Schwarzer in the form of Valencia’s Santiago Canizares. Valencia released Canizares at the end of last season starting rumours of his inevitable retirement. But Middlesbrough manager Gareth Southgate managed to convince the 38 year old to give it one last shot, the keeper agreeing to the move after spending his whole career in the Spanish league including 300 appearances for Valencia. Manucho will get his chancein the Premier League after obtaining a work permit. Santiago Canizares nowwith Middlesbrough |

PRE-MATCH REPORT ![]() Venue: Olympic Stadium, Athens Capacity: 71,030 (sold out) Weather: 29 degrees Humidity 55% Kick off time: 8pm Referee: Chistoforos Zografos Portsmouth will have their hands full in tonight’s match. AEK Athens are regarded as one of the best teams in Greece and with players like Rivaldo and Pantelis Kafes it is not hard to see why. The club can boast 11 national titles and 13 Greek Cups throughout its history which also includes a semi-final appearance in the 1977 UEFA Cup. Manager Giorgos Donis is fielding a full strength side tonight and with their loyal supporters behind them, Athens or the ‘Kitrinomavri’ (yellow blacks) as they are also known, will be out for victory. SQUADS ![]() HEAD TO HEAD CLASHES RIVALDO VS DAVID JAMESAthens’ Rivaldo will surely test his opposing captain in the match, David James given the captain’s armband in the absence of Sol Campbell. James will have to find the form that led to his call up to the England squad earlier this year if he is to keep out the Brazilian legend. Rivaldo has shown despite his age he can still put them away, scoring 23 goals for Athens last season on their way to a second place finish. Rivaldo will be looking to get his team off to a good start against Portsmouth so expect a couple of early testers for James who will have to be on his feet from the whistle. JUAN PABLO SORIN VS PANTELIS KAFESSorin will have the job of marking Kafes, who on his day, can be a game winner for his club. Likewise Kafes will have to be on his toes against Sorin and help team mate Ramos at right back in defending the Argentine who will look to push forward throughout the match. Sorin is a deadly attacker and his tactical play will be a huge factor in tonight’s match. The Kafes, Sorin match up will be the best on the park today and will be well worth keeping your eyes on. ![]() PORTSMOUTH HUMBLED BY ATHENS AEK ATHENS 2-1 PORSTMOUTH AEK Athens have beaten touring English club, Portsmouth 2-1, in an epic encounter at the Olympic Stadium in Athens, with Brazilian Rivaldo leading the way for the Greek side. Rivaldo scored the first goal of the match to send the 70,000 Athens fans gathered at the Olympic Stadium into a frenzy, and what a goal it was. Coming after some great play by both teams, Rivaldo’s quick thinking and tremendous ball skills led to the goal, which he stated after the game was one of his best. The game begun with Portsmouth controlling the play, Juan Pablo Sorin pushing forward to combine with Whittingham and Utaka on the left side of the pitch. Then AEK Athens settling into the game, seemed to step up the pace with captain Rivaldo leading the way with attacking runs and great passing, setting up Athens’ first chance on goal. Linvoy Primus would miss a simple tackle to allow Manduca through on goal, James coming off his line to clear the ball, beaten by a chip shot that lucky for Pompey hit the cross bar and was cleared by Kaboul. The teams traded blows as they both looked for the opening goal, Portsmouth caught on the counter by Rivaldo who fed the ball though to Liberopoulos. With Younes Kaboul caught out of position it looked to be a certain goal for the Greek club but James had other ideas pulling off an amazing save to keep the game at 0-0. Down the other end Juan Pablo Sorin continued to push forward and a clever one two with Whittingham ended in a beautiful cross from the Argentine, looking for Crouch in the middle. Athens goalkeeper Moretto there to punch the ball away, but only into the path of Sean Davis who let go from range only to see the ball sail over the bar. Sheer class led to the first goal, a short pass from Rivaldo to Panagiotis Lagos from an Athens corner left Rivaldo unmarked, the Brazilian making his way down the goal line for Lagos to find his captain after making a fool out of Glen Johnson in the corner. From there Rivaldo took one step, switched the ball to his right foot and boom Athens were in the lead with 35 minutes on the clock. The shot amazing David James in goal with Rivaldo curling the ball away from the goal, rather than towards it. The ball coming in from an angle outside the near post and making its way past James and the upright. The Engish keeper shaking his head in disbelief as Rivaldo celebrated with team mates. Pompey would find themselves in more trouble 5 minutes later when Pantelis Kafes would get the better of Juan Pablo Sorin out wide to send a ball hurling into the middle, Gustavo Manduco another Brazilian there to put the ball into the net. Athens up 2-0 going into half time, Portsmouth with a lot to do in the second half if they were to make anything of this match. Portsmouth’s assistant manager Jamie Redknapp, in charge for the tour of Greece and Turkey would make a tactical change to his squad in the break with Jermaine Defoe and Niko Kranjcar both brought on as Pompey came out from the break looking to get their pride back. It wasn’t long before Portsmouth fans had something to cheer about, Peter Crouch scoring his first goal for the club, making the most of the referee’s advantage after Jermaine Defoe was fouled just outside the box. Crouch pushing forward and making his way round Geraldo, to go one one one with Moretto in goals. The keeper coming off his line, leaving the bottom right corner wide open for Crouch to slot home an easy goal. Portsmouth continued to push forward and were unlucky not to draw the game soon after, John Utaka getting on the end of a Sean Davis cross and beating Moretto in goal with a header, only to have the ball hit the upright. With little time remaining, Athens were also denied by the post down the other end after a cross from Panagiotis Lagos found Manduca unmarked in goals, the strikers volley clattering against the side post, Pompey avoiding further embarrassment by inches. The match ended with Jermaine Defoe letting go of a long range effort, the shot lacking any venom to test Moretto who had a pretty good day in goals, despite not being able to keep a clean sheet. Pompey will now face Olympiacos next week and will be hoping for better fortune than in tonight’s game. as for the graphics i would usually use photoshop but I'm testing out a new program called Photoline at the moment. Very similar to photoshop, i find it really easy to use but others have said they can't get used to it. I'm pretty sure you can download it free if your interested. |
