Thanks for all the compliments guys! Keeping this online journal has actually doubled my enjoyment of Manager Mode. Regular season starts today. Will Belfast be able to compete in England, or will they fall flat?

PLAYERS TO WATCH

Toumani Diagouraga - Hereford

Toumani Diagouraga, b.1987, France, (LCM) over:61
Having been spotted by a Watford scout in Paris, Diagouraga signed for Watford's Academy. He signed professional terms in November 2004 aged just 17 after he was reportedly scouted by Premiership clubs. On August 8, 2007 he was loaned out to Hereford United in League 2 until Christmas with a view to a longer deal, with Hereford being given first option to buy Toumani. Look for Toumani to attack from the midfield.

Liam Burns (CB) - Belfast

Liam Burns, b.1978, N.Ireland, (CB) over:62.
Burns has represented Northern Ireland at Under-21 level.
He was born in Belfast, but began his career in England as a trainee with Port Vale. He went on to play for Bristol Rovers, Shrewsbury Town, Kidderminster Harriers and Forest Green Rovers before returning to Ireland.
He played for Sligo Rovers winning the First Division in 2005 and helped them to a 5th place finish in their first season in the Premier Division.
When Sean Connor left Sligo for Bohemians at the end of the 2006 season, Liam soon followed him to Dalymount Park and has been a regular in the first XI. Now he has returned to represent his hometown of Belfast in Coca Cola League 2. Burns was very effective during the preseason at shutting down opposition attacks up the middle with his perfectly timed tackles.

ABOUT THE OPPONENT

Full name Hereford United Football Club
Nickname(s) The Whites, The Bulls
Founded 1924 Ground Edgar Street,
Hereford, England
(Capacity: 7,100 (2,761 seated))
Chairman/Manager Graham Turner (England)

History: Hereford United Football Club are an English professional football club based in the city of Hereford. Founded in 1924, they will compete in League One in the 2008-09 season, the first time they will have played in the third tier for 30 years.

Hereford shot to national prominence in 1972 when, as a Southern League team, they knocked top-flight Newcastle United out of the FA Cup. In the same season they were elected to the Football League, and reached the old Second Division by 1976. But after a rapid decline into the Fourth Division, where they spent nineteen seasons, they were eventually relegated on the final day of the 1996-97 season with serious financial troubles.

After nine seasons in the Conference, Hereford returned to the Football League after winning the 2006 Conference Playoff Final.

Hereford United are managed by Graham Turner, the second longest-serving manager in the top four divisions of English football,Turner purchased the majority shareholding in 1998, saving the club from probable extinction and taking them back into the Football League with a greatly improved financial situation.Until the current season he had purchased just two players for a total of £40,000. Several players including Gavin Mahon, Gavin Williams, Paul Parry, Michael McIndoe, Andy Williams, Lionel Ainsworth and Tamika Mkandawire are now playing at a higher level.

Hereford have played at Edgar Street for their entire history and are nicknamed 'The Whites', after their predominantly white kit, and the 'The Bulls' after the local breed of cattle.

The club's motto is "Our greatest glory lies not in never having fallen, but in rising when we fall". (Source: Wikipedia)

Default Match Day Report; Hereford Utd. vs Belfast Utd.

BBC LIVE MATCH REPORT:

Kick-off - Here we are for League Two opening night on Edgar Street in Hereford. A few rain clouds moving in. Very poor turn out for this one, about 4,500 fans in attendance. Hereford are a respectable club with a rich tradition but attendance has been in a steady decline of late. Belfast is a new club with relatively strong financial backing. But money doesn't always equal wins.

The surprise of the preseason has been the play of Gary Beckett. Signing with Belfast has seemed to revive his hunger for the game. It is no wonder Sanchez has appointed him captain. And here's the kick-off...

01:23 - Shot by Robinson (Bulls), goes high.

04:13
- Kingsberry (Bfast) with a run deep into the corner, he pivots back and crosses the ball, its a perfect volley to Beckett (Bfast), Beckett heads it into GOAL! And the captain gets the first goal of the season. Score is 1-Nil for Belfast.

Gary Beckett (above) heads ball into net.

13:04 - Shot by Robinson (Bulls), save Ferry (Bfast), rebound by Burns (Bfast), he plays it out.

19:31 - Shot Benjamin (Bulls), ricochets off the post, Robinson (Bulls) gets the rebound, shot, save Ferry! Ferry covers the ball.

31:32 - McCourt (Bfast) with the ball, he's forced wide by the defender, he cuts in, shot, goes wide to the left.

45:00 - Taylor (Bulls) has the ball, he's within striking range, McChrystal (Bfast) slides to tackle but misses, Taylor shoots, and buries it top shelf! Score is tied up 1-1.

Half-time whistle - Score is at 1-1.
Bfast: with 55% possession, 58 passes, 87% completion rate. Both sides with 3 scoring chances.

50:45 - Beckett (Bfast) picks off loose ball at the top of the box, shot, goes high.

58:46 - McCourt (Bfast) passes to Higgins (Bfast) who passes to Beckett (Bfast), shot, and it goes wide to the right.

64:52 - Foul by McCourt (Bfast), free-kick to Bulls, Easton takes it, hard drive through defensive wall and tipped out past the goal line. Corner given to Bulls, Easton again, short pass to Smith (Bulls), shot, wide to left.

68:50 - McChrystal (Bfast) takes down Benjamin (Bulls) in the midfield with a hard blow to his upper body. No card given. Free kick awarded to Bulls. McCombe (Bulls) takes it, cleared by Bfast.

71:15 - Hard tackle from by Broadhurst (Bulls) who takes down Morrow (Bfast) just to the right of th box. No card is given. The officiating in this game is horrendous. Free kick Beckett (Bfast) lobs it in front of the net, cleared by Bulls.

90:00 - Only 1 minute of added time. One last attempt by Belfast, here's Higgins (Bfast), he crosses it to Beckett (Bfast), but Ingham (Bulls) intercepts it.

Final whistle - And the score remains in a 1-1 draw.

BULLS COMEBACK TO DRAW BELFAST
TAYLOR SCORES IN 45TH MINUTE

August 8th, 2007, HEREFORD - In the final seconds of the first half, midfielder Kris Taylor scored the tying goal to give Hereford United a 1-1 draw against Belfast United. It was Taylor's first goal of the new season and his first as a Bull since being signed by Hereford in July. Taylor was awarded Man of the Match for his efforts.

"It was a glorious moment!," gleamed Taylor. "I'm usually more of a facilitator than a goal scorer, so when I get one its very special."

Kris Taylor (above) scores his first goal for Bulls.

In the post match presser, Hereford Manager Graham Turner lauded his team's effort.

"I'm very proud of my boys tonight, they didn't give up and shut down the opposition despite an early deficit," said Turner.

Things looked bleak for the Bulls, when Belfast striker, Gary Beckett scored in the first 5 minutes of the match.

"After that first early goal, we thought the flood gates were going to open, but it just didn't happen for us," said Beckett.

"Again, this is a match we should have won but we let it slip through our fingers. We need to work on holding onto leads," said Belfast Manager, Lawrie Sanchez.

PLAYERS TO WATCH

Ben Davies (RM) - Shrewsbury

Ben Davies, b.1981, England, (RM) ovr:65, began his career with Walsall. He had spells with Kidderminster Harriers and Chester City, joining Shrewsbury two days before turning 25. While at Chester, Ben won a Nationwide Conference championship medal in 2004.

Davies made his Shrewsbury debut in the 2006–07 opener against Mansfield Town, which finished 2–2. He scored in Shrewsbury's next two matches, going on to net a total of 12 times over the course of the season.

Gary Beckett (ST) - Belfast Utd

Gary Beckett
, b.1973, N.Ireland, (ST) ovr:55 has earned the respect of his teamates and become a true leader on the team. Default Live Match Report; Belfast Utd vs Shrewsbury

BBC.COM LIVE MATCH REPORT:

Kick-off - Its a rare gorgeous afternoon here at Windsor Park. Not a cloud in the sky. You couldn't ask for better conditions for the season home opener of Belfast United.

Record attendance today in the range of 14,000 people. The community taking pride in their new football club. But there's room for almost twice as many fans. Its a rambunctious crowd. The Brown Boyos, Belfast's supporter group, have brought out their signature Irish bagpipes for the first time. Its a high pitched whaling noise sure to intimidate any visiting team. An eerie accompaniment to their song: "Belfast til I Die!" And we're up and running...

10:24 - Tierney (Shrews) fouls Morrow (Bfast) just right of the box. Beckett (Bfast) to take it, Beckett strikes, up over defenders, and into the hands of Garner (Shrews).

14:10 - Belfast plays the ball out of the back, McFlynn, to Higgins, to Beckett, Beckett cuts in, shot from top of box, GOAL! Belfast leads 1-Nil. Boyos sing "Only on Gary Beckett!"

26:46
- Here's Beckett again, he finds space in the box, shot, GOAL! And now Belfast is up 2-Nil!
Beckett dives into the Brown Boyos section in celebration.

31:18
- Higgins (Bfast) with a long run up the right wing, pivots, crosses to Beckett (Bfast), and Beckett heads it wide to the right.

34:00 - Langmead (Shrews), he's taking on defenders one after the other, juking in and out, breakaway, shot, GOAL! Score is 2-1 Belfast.

39:54
- Beckett (Bfast) with the ball, he's making a run up the middle, Murdock (Shrews) is right with him, Beckett pulls ahead, Murdock tackles him from behind in a desperate bid to stop him, PENALTY! Beckett will take it. He is one for two on penalties during the preseason. He strikes it up the middle, HAT-TRICK! Belfast leads 3-1, all goals by Beckett. The entire crowd chants "Beckett, Beckett, Beckett!" He waves to the crowd.

42:10 - Freekick Shrews, Tierney to take it, shoots it high.

45:00 - 2 minutes of stoppage time added. Here's Davies (Shrews), in a dangerous spot deep into Belfast territory, its a low cross to Hibbert (Shrews), GOAL! Shrewsbury still in it, the score is 3-2 for Belfast.

Now Morrow (Bfast), long shot, goes wide to the left.

Half-time - whistle and the score at the half is a very close 3-2, Belfast leads. We have a goal fest on our hands folks. Belfast with 58% possession, 67 passes at a 92% completion rate. Lots of chances on both sides.

46:16 - Substitution for Belfast: Kingsbury out ----> McQuoid in at CAM, Higgins moves to RM. Freekick Belfast, Burns to take it from midfield. A high lob toward the box, Shrews clear it.

50:22 - Hibbert (Shrews) with the ball, shot, goes wide.

51:55 - Beckett (Bfast) looking for another goal, shot, wide. Substitution for Belfast: McCourt out ----> Banks in at LM.

55:55 - McQuoid attacks up the middle, he's pushed down from behind. Freekick awarded to Belfast. Beckett to take it, but is he within striking distance? Beckett strikes it, up over the Shrews wall, ball bends to the left and it hits the crossbar and bounces up! But wait, its come down and landed off the defender's back and rolled into the net. Its a GOAL! Amazing! Beckett, the striker many thought was washed up, now with 4 goals in the first 60 minutes of play. Belfast leads 4-2.

57:26
- Foul by Morrow, freekick awarded to Shrews. Its a high lob deep into Bruins' end and Belfast plays it out the back. Banks, to McQuoid, to Morrow, he finds space in front of the net, shoots, and SCORES! Top right shelf, surely their lead is now safe: Belfast 5, Shrews 2.

76:10
- Here's Shrewsbury captain Davies, he's tearing through Belfast's defense like they're standing still, shot, and it goes through Ferry's legs! Shrewsbury isn't giving up, they're still down by two as Belfast leads 5-3.

82:44
- Morrow (Bfast) with a long run, he looks winded, shoots, and it goes wide to the left.

86:53 - Langmead (Shrews) in striking range, shot, goes wide to the right. Substitution: Higgins out ----> Jones in at RM.

90:00 - 3 minutes of added time. Here's Langmead (Shrews) again, he's dancing around defenders like they're pylons, shot, and its a GOAL! Top left shelf and Shrewsbury is very much in this game as Belfast's lead shrinks to one goal: Belfast 5-4. Ferry (Bfast) hasn't stopped anything today but his defense hasn't been much help.

Its happening again, everyone know Belfast has trouble holding onto leads. Belfast in control of the ball, not letting Shrewsbury near it.

Final whistle - and their lead, however slim is safe, Belfast wins 5-4.

ITS RAINING GOALS!
BELFAST SQUEAKS OUT 5-4 VICTORY

Gary Beckett (above) scores on a long drive. Just 1 of his 4 goals on the night.

August 11th, 2007, BELFAST, NI - Belfast United's season home opener
against Shrewsbury Town was filled with drama. Just when it looked like Belfast had a clear lead, Shrewsbury would answer with a goal of their own.

9 goals in all were scored, 4 of which were scored by Belfast striker Gary Beckett, who won Man of the Match and the hearts of the home fans when he dove into the bleachers to celebrate.

"Scoring 4 goals in a game is simply amazing," says Beckett. "I never thought I had it in me but now I know I can lead this team to a Championship."

Gary Beckett (above) winds up for a long free kick from midfield, and scores.

A championship is exactly what Belfast Manager, Lawrie Sanchez, has in mind. In 6 consecutive games, Belfast has gone undefeated under his tutelage. Still, ever the perfectionist, he demands more from his players.

"Tonight we saw that we can clearly score goals," says Sanchez. "The question remains, can we defend?"

nice win, lots of goals....just wondering, is Belfast Utd, an actual team?? Or did you just take the players from Northern Ireland and put them on a created team?

Belfast United is a created team with Northern Irish players picked from mostly teams in the FAI Eircom League. I picked low skill players and a low budget to make it more challenging (and realistic). As the team grows, better players will come and hopefully we'll make it to the Premiership eventually.

There's sure to be some dramatic signings down the road once the club becomes profitable. Stay Tuned.

Default Live Match Report; Belfast Utd vs Chester

BBC.COM LIVE MATCH REPORT:

Kick-off - Here we are at Deva Stadium where you can literally have one foot in England and the other in Wales. Some rain clouds are forming, hopefully they won't affect the match.

About 4,300 fans in attendance tonight, slightly higher than average. They will watch their local club Chester City take an emerging contender, Belfast United. Teams are evenly matched. Should be a good one...

33:06 - Here's Morrow (Bfast), long shot from midfield and its high and wide.

34:04 - Morrow (Bfast) again, in a dangerous position, tackled from behind by Butler (Chester), PENALTY! And to top it off, the ref issues Butler a yellow card. The crowd upset with the call but that's a clear yellow, if not a red. Beckett (Bfast) will take the penalty kick, shot goes top right, GOAL! Belfast leads 1-Nil.

35:18
- Chester City with the ball deep into Belfast territory, Murphy, shoots, GOAL! And Chester responds in kind with a goal of their own just one minute after Belfast's. A clear pattern of Belfast not being able to hold onto leads continues. Unless he does something about this soon, Lawrie Sanchez is surely to get some criticism as he had the same difficulty when he managed Fulham. Score is tied up at 1-1.

44:40
- Beckett (Bfast), given lots of space in the corner, too much space, opposing teams are starting to fear him. He services a low cross to Morrow (Bfast), Morrow heads it it, GOAL! Belfast leads again, 2-1. Can they hold on or will we see a repeat of Shrewsbury?

Morrow heads in the ball past Ward.

45:00 - Beckett (Bfast) is fouled, free kick, Beckett will take it. He strikes it, tipped away by Ward (Chester). Corner given, McFlynn (Bfast) to take it, High volley to the box, cleared away by Chester. 2 minutes of added time.

Chester counters, Yeo (Chester) with a driving shot from outside the box, tipped away by Ferry (Bfast). Corner to Chester, Ellison (Chester) will take it, he puts it in the box, punched away by Ferry.

Half-time - whistle. Bfast: 60% possession, 68 passes, 86% completion rate.

47:55 - The rain has been picking up and conditions on the pitch have worsened. Here's Yeo (Chester), to Murphy (Chester), shot, goes high and wide.

54:09 - Ball cleared out of bounds by Turner (Bfast) Throw-in for Chester. Substitution for Belfast: McQuoid in ----> Higgins out. Thrown in to Yeo Chester), shot, save Ferry (Bfast).

64:28
- Morrow, shot, goes high. Substitution for Chester: Vaughn in ----> Butler out. Chester manager Simon Davies not risking a second yellow card for Butler.

73:59 - Ball cleared out of bounds by Belfast. Substitution for Belfast: Dolman in ----> Turner out. This is Dolman's debut for Belfast. Can he help them hold onto the lead?

80:32 - Morrow (Bfast) with the ball, he's been very aggressive, shot, save Ward (Chester).

90:00 - Chester with one last chance to tie things up. A cross by Partridge (Chester), but Ferry (Bfast) intercepts it. Cleared out of bounds by Belfast. Substitution for Belfast: Banks in ----> Kingsberry out.

Final whistle - Belfast 2, Chester 1.
