From the Diary of Devon Johnson

It was a tough game for both us and the Columbus Crew, and it showed in the result. A 1-1 draw that resulted in 1 point for both clubs. I was really expecting a victory, but we fell just short. Here is the article from the Record. It is a well written piece that captures the emotion and struggle in the match.

Second Half Equalizer Earns Red Bulls A Draw
After a disappointingly short post season and a way too long preseason that saw Bruce Arena resign and Juan Osorio arrested the Red Bulls season finally start yesterday in a match against the Columbus Crew. After only three minutes of play Brian Carroll, midfielder for the Crew, put one in the back of the net. Red Bulls counter-attacked with 4 shots in 15 minutes, but it was all to no avail. After that foray goals nothing interesting happened on the pitch until the 38th minute. In the 38th Red Bulls striker Jozy Altidore, the Red Bulls eighteen year old phenom, made a costly mistake. Frankie Heiduk had just stolen the ball from Claudio Reyna, when Altidore came sliding in at full speed. Heiduk was knocked on to the ground and began writhing in pain. Almost immediately after the tackle occurred referee Steven Barber handed Altidore his first career MLS yellow card. Meanwhile Heiduk was diagnosed with a dislocated knee and will miss at least one more Crew match.
After the tackle the game calmed down and going into half-time the score was still one-nil. Coach Devon Johnson must have delivered a wonderful speech in the locker room, because his club came out with a vengeance. Dane Richard, Claudio Reyna, and Dema Kovalenko all had shots saved within the first ten minjutes of the second half. But it proved Jozy Altidore, with a yellow card to his name, who tied up the game. In the 57th minute Altidore intercepted a Crew pass and fired a shot up from the edge of the penalty box. Crew goalie Will Hesmer dove for the ball, but it was out of reach. The score was now tied at one goal apiece. Nothing more of interest, only some fierce challenges around mid-field. The two Red Bull substitutions were midfielders Sinsia Ubiparovic and Camp. Out came Jamaican international Dane Richards and Dema Kovalenko. Unfortunately for Red Bulls, neither Camp or Ubiparovic could push across a goal. The Man of the Match was Jozy Altidore who had 3 of his 5 accurate, and he also scored Red Bulls only goal. Red Bulls next match is against FC Dallas at the Meadowlands.

From the Diary of Devon Johnson
Our next match shall be against FC Dallas. FC Dallas is currently 10th, with 2 points in 2 games. I believe once again we are good enough to win, but I would not be surprised with a second draw.

Some key footballers that could make an impact for them are Carlos Ruiz, who has one goal this season, Juan Carlos Toja, a decent midfielder, and their goalkeeper, Dario Sala.

Juan Toja in a friendly against us in the beginning of the year

Carlos Ruiz chases down the football

Dario Sala

My squad for the game shall remain same except for left back. At Left Back Kevin Goldthawaite replaces Chris Leitch.

From the Diary of Devon Johnson

After an intense 90 minutes of play, we have prevailed with our first victory of the campaign, with a score of 3-2 over FC Dallas. The match started with both sides opening up a series of rocket shots. In the first 25 minutes there was 9 accurate shots, 5 of which were shot by us. But unfortunately for us, FC Dallas scored first. The score came in the 32nd minute after a corner kick by Kenny Cooper. Carlos Ruiz received the pass and then fired a blistering shot into the top corner of the net. But the defiant Red Bulls would not be held down for long. Less than nine minutes later, our striker Juan Pablo Angel intercepted a pass and scored on a one-on-one wiith Dallas' keeper. Both teams went into halftime tied, but we would change that in the second half. Five minutes after the second half began, my phenom striker Jozy Altidore scored an easy goal after a beautiful Claudio Reyna pass. Following two almost-goals by Dallas,, we launched another fierce counter-attack, and just like last attack, it was Altidore who put one in the back of the net. The game had already been in hand, but in stoppage time Kenny Cooper scored to make it a one-point match. After the game in our locker room I gave Jozy the Man of The Match Award for the second time. Our next match is against second-place Toronto FC.

From the diary of Devon Johnson
Pre-Match Report
With already two games under my belt, I am preparing for our third, a match against second place Toronto FC. Toronto has a very solid club led by Midfielder Carl Robinson, Striker Danny Dichio, and two other Mid fielders Maurice Edu and Ronnie O'Brien. This is sure to be a tough, high scoring games featuring many well executed attacks and counter attacks. Meanwhile, on our side of the pitch, I have decided to place Chris Leitch back in the lineup, while resting defender Hunter Freeman in favor for Jeff Parke. In other lineup changes I have decided to start John Wolyneic over Juan Angel and rest Dave Van der Bergh so Sinsia Ubaparoic could record his first start of the year. I have also happened upon the betting line for the match.

Maurice Edu, Toronto's Star Prospect

Carl Robinson, Toronto's other Star Mid Fielder

Danny Dichio, if he plays like this against us, I guarantee a win

Scoring Line
Toronto FC wins by 1- 4:1
Toronto FC wins by 2- 6:1
Toronto FC wins by 3- 9:1
Draw- 8:1
Red Bulls win by 1- 6:1
Red Bulls win by 2- 8:1
Red Bulls win by 3- 11:1
FC Scoring
Robinson Goal- 5:1
Dichio Goal- 8:1
O'Brien Goal- 12:1
Edu Goal- 15:1
Red Bulls Scoring
Altidore Goal- 4:1
Reyna Goal- 9:1
Richards Goal- 13:1
Wolyneck Goal- 19:1
Other- 22:1

From the Diary of Devon Johnson
High Scoring Match Results In Red Bulls Win

In possibly our best offensive effort in the history of Red Bulls history, we also had to suffer through our worst defended effort this year. In ninety ferocious minutes play we ended up winning 6-4 over Toronto FC. By far our best performance was put on by little used substitute John Wolyneic. John, in his first start of the year scored a hat trick , of his three goal effort, two came in the second half to lead an improbable come back. The game started off inocently enough with only a few chances in the opening twenty five minutes. But in the 27th minute the floodgates opened. Toronto's star Mid Fielder Maurice Edu launched a rocket of a shot into the top of the net to give Toronto a 1-0 lead. Then only eight minutes later Toronto striker Dan Dichio scored on an interception that he made well into the Red Bull side of the pitch. But, with Toronto leading 2-0 nil in the 44th minute Maurice Edu scored again to give Toronto a commanding three nil lead. John Wolyneic though answered back with a goal of his own in added time right before both clubs headed into the locker rooms, to cut the lead to 3-1. After half-time, though the whole feel of the match changed. Jozy Altidore scored his fourth goal of the campaign only two minutes into the second half of the match. Then, following a beatiful Altidore pass Wolyneic notched his second goal to make it a one goal match. Toronto quickly answered with their fourth goal of the match. But, Jozy wouldn't be held down for much longer. Looking for his second goal of the match Jozy launched a beautiful shot that somehow found the net, to make it a 4-4 game. After Alty's goal we dominated the pitch. In the 82nd minute Dane Richards gave us a 5-4 lead, and Johnny W scored his third goal of the match, to give us a final 6-4 victory. Following this masterpiece of a match we will take on the Chicago Fire at the Meadowlands
