Chelsea vs Everton Match Report Premier League 30th August 2008 ![]() Joe Cole scored his second of the season for Chelsea This was one of the most important matches of the season for both teams, as the winner would be given an early 3 point lead. A draw would be okay for Everton at Stamford Bridge, but not a defeat. Difficulty: Proffessional Half Duration: 8 mins Formation: 3-5-2 Lineup: K. Schmeichel J. Lescott, J. Yobo, L. Baines Joaquin, Jagielka, De Rossi, Fernandes, Arteta Fabiano, Huntelaar 1st Half Both sides kicked off well, and possession was spread throughout the pitch. Neither side could score early on thanks to a few good saves and offside decisions. Unfortunately for Everton, Chelsea were able to scramble a lead in the 43rd minute, after Kameni made a great save that left the goal open to whoever received the deflection. Unfortunately thath man was Joe Cole, and it was 1-0 to Chelsea. But Everton didnt leave it till after half time to try and equalise - they quickly reformed and Huntelaar got a goal 5 minutes into injury time, after Cech saved Joaquin's sensational shot. ![]() First Half Result: Chelsea 1 - 1 Everton J. Cole 43' K. Huntelaar 45+5' Second Half Michael Ballack almost gave Everton an early scare as his slow header hit the bar, but order was quickly restored. Phil Jagielka tried to crack a sneaky shot into the top corner from 25 yards, but the keeper punched it back into play. Niklas Bendtner came on as a sub for Luis Fabiano in the 74th minute to add some aerial advantage, and this almost prooved brilliant as he quickly volleyed goalwards, only for the keeper to make an excellent save. However the result remained the same throughout, and both sides walked out of the match with a point. Final Result: Chelsea 1 - 1 Everton Joe Cole 43' K. Huntelaar 45+5' Man of the Match: Michael Essien ![]() Post Match Managers Comment: 'This, on paper, looked to be our toughest Premier League match of the season - but we walked away with a point. If it had been at home, we wouldn't be celebrating, but at Stamford Bridge, why not?' Everton vs Fulham Match Report Premier League 3rd September 2008 ![]() Joseph Yobocop getting the ball back for Everton. Everton returned to Goodison park seeking a victory to maintain their position on top. Difficulty: Proffessional Half Duration: 8 mins Formation: 3-5-2 Lineup: C. Kameni J. Lescott, J. Yobo, L. Baines M. Arteta, P. Neville, Figo, De Rossi, Kewell J. Vaughan, N. Bendtner 1st Half Fulham had an excellent start to the game, with Niemi providing back to back saves denying Bendtner a goal following 2 clear shots on goal. He was again there in the 35th minute to deny what looked certain to be goal from Bendtner. The half time whistle blew, and Niklas Bendtner was furious not to have scored, following 4 or 5 great chances. First Half Result: Everton 0 - 0 Fulham Second Half However, Niklas Bendtner got his wish as he headed home brilliantly from a Mikel Arteta cross. This 51st minute goal provided the players with some added inspiration, however the determination to score was handed to Fulham. After 2 minutes it was 1-1, Fulham had caught Everton off guard. But Everton left it till late to end Fulham's celebrations - when James Vaughan scored his fourth of the season in the 84th minute. Once again it was a header, this time coming from a Luis Figo cross. The final whistle blew 10 minutes later, and Everton had beaten a furious Fulham side quite comfortably. Final Result: Everton 2 - 1 Fulham Bendtner 51' Nevland 54' Vaughan 84' Man of the Match: Erik Nevland (1 goal) ![]() Post Match Managers Comment: 'We really didn't expect that from Fulham. This may not have been our strongest side, but they seemed to outplay us for most of the match. A lot of credit to the goalscorers - Bendtner and Vaughan - both of them used their heads (literally).' Yakubu Returns for Everton! ![]() Yakubu marked his return from injury with a man of the match performance against Aston Villa, in which he scored 2 goals. Luis Fabiano had opened the scoring only 75 seconds into the match following a great individual effort after tackling Aston Villa's kickoff. Yakubu then shrugged off any injury claims after being badly tackled in the 4th minute in a yellow card challenge, and then scored his first goal 13 minutes into his comeback. Joaquin had passed into the box, and Yakubu instinctively struck towards goal with his first touch, beating the keeper on the near post. Davies was injured in the 15th minute, but the real injury came when Aston Villa were awarded a contraversial penalty in the 20th minute. Gareth Barry slotted home in the left corner, after the keeper was unable to move (!!!). But Everton didnt let this affect their performance as Yakubu dribbled 20 yards down the centre of the pitch, before striking from a similar range to that of Gareth Barry's penalty in the 59th minute. 3-1 Everton. However, even more controversy was sparked as defender Olof Mellberg was given a second yellow card in the 60th minute for a bad tackle on Yakubu. This provided Aston Villa with a hole in their defence, which Everton did their best to attack. ![]() This happened straight away, as Huntelaar scored less than a minute after the red card was shown - from the free kick that was awarded. Baines struck the ball and it hit one of the Aston Villa players. However Huntelaar sneakily tackled the last defender and slotted the ball through the goalkeeper's feet. However despite having the extra man, Everton could not seem to get a fifth goal. Huntelaar hit the post after a clear attempt, and Manuel Fernandes was denied his first goal of the campaign by the keeper. The final whistle put an end to all the controversy, and Everton walked away with a phenominal 4-1 away victory. Final Result: Aston Villa 1 - 4 Everton Luis Fabiano 02' Yakubu 13' G. Barry (pen) 21' Yakubu 59' K. Huntelaar 60' Man of the Match: Yakubu (2 goals) ![]() Post Match Managers Comment: 'Wow. There's certainly a lot to talk about - but i'll leave that to Gary Linekar. Great performance, great result - glad to have Yakubu back as he really does make a difference. Had it not been for the penalty we would've had a perfect game. Now we can relax a bit as we focus on the Carling Cup' Current Funds: £2,727,780 League position: 1st - 13 points Current Date: 6th September 2008 Next Match:
