I've stickied this thread for now for others to see, thanks for troubleshooting this yourselves, if you are having problems you can try what has been suggested if you are unable to play online. The offending update appears to be the latest IE7 update and this information has been passed onto the FIFA team. You do this at your own risk and we do not suggest that you uninstall windows updates!

I've edited the title of the thread accordingly.

So it is for sure this pesky windows update file causing all the probs "Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 7 in Windows Vista (KB942615)"

I know because i just installed all the other windows updates available and left out that one that we thought could be the culperate and hey presto !! the game works fine online.

So, just to confirm, when doing the windows updates make sure you DONT TAKE the one called "Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 7 in Windows Vista (KB942615)" or else it will mess up you being able to get into the online games.......hope this helps.

p.s
Now though, what does the update "Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 7 in Windows Vista (KB942615)" actually do ?? do we need it ?? I guess we probably do, microsoft say its an important security update, so we are now left saying "what do we do now with this update" ???

So come on EA and microsoft, either fix it, or let us know how to fix it please, thanks.

this needs to be addressed. The security patches for windows are installed to fix 11 bugs in IE7. Addressed by Microsoft Security Bulletin MS07-069 i believe.

We should not need to uninstall a windows update to play a game. This is an EA problem with their shabby lobby software. Most likely because of the way it's executed at runtime and how it interacts with IE during use.
EA need to sort this out because i, and many many others, aren't stupid enough to uninstall security patches that fix bugs to prevent malicious attacks on our computers.
Telling people to uninstall these patches leaves you liable to be blamed, even if it's just a work around.

I un-installed the up-date (KB942615) and was able to get on the EA on-line lobby, I later switched my computer off and the up-date re-installed, do I have to un-install it every time I want to play on-line? I think EA should sort this problem out quickly and If they are working on it how will we know when the problem has been solved and we will be able to play on-line with the offending up-date installed?

Guys... need your help BADLY!!!

I have the same problem - have Vista, computer automatically downloaded the updates (gave like a 5 minute countdown when I wasn't at the computer and restarted itself), and now my Fifa 08 Online doesn't work...

And I am an IT spaz... so I need your help:

1) How do you uninstall the updates (basically reverse time by 30 minutes!)? Please a step-by-step, idiot proof, guide - so when you say "go to System Tools" that means nothing to me.

2) How can I turn off the option that automatically updates my computer? Once again, a step-by-step guide would be much appreciated.

Sorry for the trouble guys, but I would be extremely thankful...

To install an update go to the control panel, select "Programs and Features", click on "View installed updates" in the top left, click on the update you want to uninstall, and click on "Uninstall".

You do this at your own risk with any update and we do not suggest that you uninstall windows updates!

So I guess if we get malware, Identity theft, or anything of the sort because of the lack of installing that update (as on the update description), EA is making itself liable for lawsuits or agreements since it had one of it's admins instruct us to disable Microsoft's critical security patch.
Sounds like a deal to me...

Yep ... works on this end as well. When in doubt, unload the updates! Funny thing was i was able to chat with folk via the Messenger while not logged in. I could see the games but couldn't play! Sad really.

Scots777 ... we got a game to have mate!

Exactly. Prem, you need to add a big fat disclaimer to your posts mate. Just telling people to uninstall a critical windows update isn't the cleverest thing you've posted by far.

And while we're on the subject, is anything actually going to be done about this by EA? Do they even know it's happening? It's a bit disappointing that we've had zero communication about this issue from EA aside from "uninstall this windows update".

It has been passed on to the FIFA team.

Its not just on FIFA its the same on TIGER WOODS 08. Will we be informed when the problem is sorted out so that the up-date (KB942615) can be installed? Or is it a case of if you want to play an EA game on-line you have to accept that there is a risk involved?

I think EA Sports doesn't respect his clients. It took them 2 months to solve the online bugs with the autoswitching and automatic pass. And they will probably took another 2 months to solve this. I can't belive this. We shoud never buy any Fifa game.

Default Windows Update

To solve this problem, you have to remove the update from Internet Explorer 7 (in Add and Remove Programs). Then restart the computer.

I'm with you Therapyman9, Will EA please give us more information, We need to know when the up-date can be installed. EA didnt even come up with the solution of removing up-date KB942615, It was left to various good people on this thread. I bet there is loads of people out there tearing their hair out trying to figure out why they cant get on the EA on-line gaming lobbies.
