Buying players, or signing free agents, is generally a very expensive way to acquire new talent for a lower league club. I would recommend spending your money on an upgrade or two for your scouting staff and then doing deep searches of England for any player (ie. don't specify a position unless you desperately need to fill a gap) followed by a rotation around the other scouting areas (there is little point in repeating searches in an area with same level of scout as they will almost certainly return the same players each time, especially if you don't sign any of the players they find the first time)

It doesn't work that way - if they are going to be stars then they won't be as cheap as players that will be average.

I'm doing a MM with Torquay, but i'm in the EPL, so i'm probably a little bit more advanced than you are this stage. Until you get some money in the pouch then as steve said use the scouting system, not transfers. When you get a bit of money say maybe 2-5 million, then you should start to make some transfers and look for free agents. I found some good in Good talent in Adriano Barrufaldi (Italian Striker from norwich) and Koslewski (polish striker, found as free agent.) They don't become out and out "superstars", but they get me plenty of goals and are great support for my main man Joel Grant.
