I have a couple living in a house with 3 other families.

Can I change the other families? Like, my couple met a townie (so, not playable) that they both like. Can she move next door? I tried making her a roomie, but she's still not playable. And since she's a townie, she's not living anywhere at the moment so she can't "move".

I guess there are mods for this, but I'm not going to use them. Can I eg. make her a member of the family to make her playable? My couple is... well, a couple, so marriage is out of the question ;)

Glad if anyone can help!

Hello all! Those of you who have seen my 'A new Way To Play The Sims 2' thread may be wondering why there is another thread about it. It's because I've decided to make one thread about the AFR in general, and another about my specific WishLinia Alpha Family Race.

I've taken on board people's reactions to my provisional rules and I've decided to amend and update them here -

The Alpha Family Race - A Sims 2 Concept from the Mind of WishLine

Aim: To create a new neighbourhood with a road snaking up a hill and fill it with 3 or 5 families, some community lots and many plots of land. To play each family in even stints to make them the most successful. To advance each family up the hill when they meet certain criteria.

Setting up an AFR - Setting up this challenge takes a fair amount of preparation. First, create a new neighbourhood using the Three Lakes (From TS2; Bon Voyage) .sc4 file. Then follow these instructions

Name all the clusters you are about to make as different Roads, for example "1,2,3,4 and 5 Alpha Road" or "1,2 and 3 First Street"

Create five plots of residential land using some of the smallest plots available at the bottom end of the road.

Further up the hill, make a cluster of five slightly bigger (still quite small) plots of residential land

Still further up the hill, create a cluster of four medium residential plots.

Near the top of Three Lakes, Put 3 large empty lots

At the furthest end of the road, place the largest lot available. Give it a good name like 'Maximum Manor'

Just a bit before that, place a slightly smaller empty lot. Give it a decent name like 'Second-Place Plaza'

(RECOMMENDED, NOT MANDATORY) Build or add 2 or 3 community lots at various points on your snaking road

(OPTIONAL) Use a 'Tiny'-size lot and make it look dark and dingy. This can be a graveyard - if you have the right EP, move your departed sims here

Populating your neighbourhood
Once you have done all of this, you will want to create and move in some sim families

Create THREE or FIVE married couples in CAS. Try to vary your families in Aspiration, Personality and values ('culture', if you will).

Build and fully furnish a house for each one in your first cluster at the bottom of the hill.

Move each one in and quit immediately after the cinematic

Once you have done all of this, you need to stipulate the game targets

How long is each turn? Is it separated into human minutes or sim days?

How much net worth (House value + Family Funds) ought each family to have before they can uphouse to a larger plot further up the hill?

It should look something like this: 50,000 to uphouse the first time, 80,000 the second time, 125,000 the time after that, 175,000 the time after that and 250,000 to move to the best plot and win!

If you are creating a story

The first storyboard should show your neighbourhood with all plots of land empty and its community lots in place. Introduce the neighbourhood and explain you are playing an 'Alpha Family Race'. Stipulate the time and form each turn will take (see above)

The next five slides should zoom in on each cluster (Road), and explain how much money the families need to get there

The next five slides should introduce each family. Its sims, and their personalities and aspirations should all be explored. use the blue-background photo of each family that the game provides.

Then proceed to take a photo of each family once per turn, and qrite a bit about what they get up to during that turn

Rules

No immortality. Sims must age and die normally. No Elixir, Cow Plant or Resurrections. Also no Sims that don't age (no vampires, servos, etc. Aliens are fine)

No game cheats. If you want to feel like you've acheived something, then do it the honourable way!

No Sim-Owned businesses - the time warp that these create, plus the hassle of writing in the rules mean that it's much simpler to stick to usual careers.

It's worth noting that having a large family has its advantages. Sims should probably go to University, not only because of the good careers a degree will unlock, but because of the 20,000 simoleon bonus that the sims bring when moved back in.

When sims are at Uni, players should play 1/4 (min) - 1/3 (max) of the turn in the main house, and 2/3 (min) - 3/4 (max) at the University.

Sims of rival families may not move into each others house except by marriage (by which point their surname would have changed). This includes Campus Housing.

Sims may marry townies, NPCs or rival family members. Which family the couple belongs to is determined by the surname. If Derek Jones clicks on Georgina Smith, she becomes Georgina Jones and moves in to the Jones household. She is lost to the Smith family. If Georgina clicked on Derek, the opposite is true. Derek would become Derek Smith and would be lost to the Joneses forever.

Family funds must not exceed 10,000 unless the family is moving out when the turn ends.

No Sim may use the Propose --> Move In interaction. It must happen by Marriage or not at all.

During Adult or Elder stage, a portrait must be painted or a photograph taken of each sim, and be kept with the family throughout the rest of the game.

Uphousing
When your family uphouses, they must sell all belongings except

Items worth more than 2,000 simoleons

Cars of any description

Aspirational or Career reward objects

Other awards (Placques of Hobbies, for example)

Sim-crafted objects (photos, portraits, novels, OFB toys/flowers/robots

These items can be placed into a sim's inventory.

Winning Conditions
The first family to move into the largest plot at the top of the hill is declared the winner. The family that affords the 'runner up' plot next to it is declared to be in second place.

Losing conditions
If a family dies out (nobody with that surname left), they cannot restart or respawn. They're gone. Members of that family who have been married into rival families do not count as members of that family.

Please see my other thread for my live example, the WishLinia AFR. I'm hoping to get this thread stickied to the top - only you can make this possible for me by commenting and suggesting!

Thanks for reading and good luck

I decided to make a one person family and not cheat at all, and it was good fun. I have always used cheats before, and it's fun, but you don't get that feeling of satisfaction when you can afford to buy a bigger house. So, who here uses cheats ALL the time?

I got a lend of Sims 2 off a friend. And I have a issue with it. I haven't downloaded anything or used any custom items. I just literally started it up and it had this problem.

When I click on something, you know the way your head comes up and theres options around your head to choose? When I click on something, it only gives me half a second before dissappearing, this pretty much makes it unplayable for me since I can't click most options. Especially the ones that links into other options.

I have a Dell Inspiron 1501 laptop.

Any solution to this? This is the only thing thats annoying me.
Please help me.

Hello everyone,

This thread now documents the WishLinia Alpha Family Race. Please see my other thread for discussion of the AFR concept in general. The WishLinia AFR is the original example of my unique way of playing the Sims 2.

Five turn cycles have been played so far at the time of writing, and quite a lot of progress has been made. The most recent version of the journal can be found right here

Have fun reading, and please comment
