Introduction
![]() My mum gripped my hands tightly and swung me around in the air like a dolly. “Wee…” I screamed with laugher, holding on tight so I wouldn’t go flying. It was nice to spend an evening with my mum. She has been so busy lately with work; she’s hardly ever at home. I have a nanny called Julie. She’s a great person, and meets me off the school bus at three o’ clock when I arrive home from school. Sometimes she helps me with my homework, and keeps the apartment nice and clean for when mum arrives home at nine. It’s too long a shift I think. It’s really taken a toll on mum ever since she has been working so many hours. She told me it was to make sure she kept a roof over our heads. It would be great if we moved though, our apartment block isn’t exactly great, and with the money mum pays the landlord every week, we could surely find a more suitable place to live. Everybody on the block is young and single. All of them have parties outside, and in the summer they have huge pool parties with a massive group of friends, and dance till the early hours of the morning. They are all really nice people, especially Bruce. He’s my favourite. ![]() Bruce has red hair and a great big smile which would brighten up any sad person’s day, which is why I think he’s such a catch with mum. Mum doesn’t go out a lot, and hasn’t left my side since I was born. I feel sorry for her, being stuck indoors with me. She’s a young, single parent who needs to go out sometimes and has fun. Lately she has been hanging out with the neighbours, joining in with their drinking games by the pool, dancing all night long. I watch her from my bedroom window, when she thinks I’m asleep. Which is another thing; the place we are living, only has one bedroom, which means I have to share a room with my mum. I have my own bed and everything, but I wish I could have my own space. “We cannot afford it love, I’m sorry” Mum says over breakfast one morning. I know she is lying. Why would she want to move when Bruce lives just next door, and she can happily party with the rest of the party animals on the block? ![]() Mum and I have begun to argue a lot, ever since I told her I wanted to get in contact with my dad. “Why do you want to see him for? Bruce is more of a dad than he is”! Mum shouts. In a sense, she is right. I can bang on Bruce’s door anytime of day, and he’ll offer me in for juice and cookies and we’ll watch a movie in front of his massive widescreen television. But it just isn’t the same as having a real dad around. Mum says I look like my dad. I have his blue eyes and brown hair like him. She gave me a picture of him, holding me for the first time when I was just moments old. “That was the first and last time he ever held you, and he definitely won’t be doing it again anytime soon, not while I’m still alive” Mum curses. |

Chapter One
![]() Morning starts at the breakfast bar. Mum cooked us pancakes for breakfast and we sat down to eat. “Summer, I have been thinking. What would you say if Bruce moved in with us”? Mum questioned shyly. Pfft, over my dead body! He’s a great guy and everything, but I couldn’t imagine him being around all the time, and speaking to him like he’s my parent. So I let mum know of my feelings. “Oh, well I just thought I might let you know. I have a day off work today, and I’m going round Bruce’s for lunch. I just thought you might like to know” Mum replied, clanking the fork down on the plate and walking upstairs. She’s in a mood now. She hates the fact that she’s a mum, I just know it! She’s still young and wants to party and have no responsibilities and to live a care free life without a child to look after. I cannot blame her though. I’m not the best person to get along with. Maybe it’s because we are always treading on each other’s toes. The flat is so small; we are like sardines squashed in a tin! Maybe that’s why mum decided to work so many hours at work, just to get some peace and quiet. I tiptoed upstairs after her, and I find her rummaging in her closet for something to wear with her date with Bruce. “I just don’t understand why you cannot be happy for me Summer”? Mum exclaims, head in the closet. “I don’t see why you have to be with Bruce. Why can’t you ring dad and get back with him…I’m sure he still loves you after all these years” ![]() “We have had this conversation too many times Summer; I’m sick and tired of repeating myself over and over again. There is no hope for me and you father! He’s a selfish man, who deserves to be buried alive for all the cruel things he done to me while I was pregnant” “But he wasn’t around when you was pregnant, you said…” I have caught her out! “Maybe so, but that’s my point! Where was he aye!? Too busy with work to be a dad to you, I just didn’t bother sticking around” I believe my dad moved out because of mum. She can get moody so easily, and something so simple can set her off! I also believe dad left her because he wanted to make himself a better person. Maybe he wasn’t ready to be a dad, but knew when he finally come back home, he would have to buy me all the things I needed. I just don’t think mum totally understands that. She’s the one being selfish. Mum left my clothes lying on the bed, and went back downstairs for some peace. I got ready for school, in some boring old clothes. She hasn’t taken me shopping for weeks, and these clothes I have now are getting rather tight around the waist, and short around the ankles. No wonder I’m getting bullied at school. ![]() I hear the front door slam shut, and mum’s footsteps walking past the flat. I see her walking in her pyjamas to Bruce’s flat; she didn’t even bother sticking on something nice to wear. How is she going to make a good impression, looking like she has just crawled out of bed? Once again, she walks out when she cannot get her own way; I’ve begun to wonder who the adult in this house is! There’s a drawer in mum’s bedside cabinet, which has all her personal things stashed away in. I’ve been told never to go through this drawer, but guess what? I’m going to go through it anyway. I want to find dad’s number; she must have it in here somewhere! Bills, an old pink diary, pictures of mum in her youth…Arrgh, here it is. A small piece of paper with dad’s name, address and telephone number on it. I quickly shove it in my pocket, and run back down the stairs. I have ten minutes before the school bus arrives, and there’s no sign of mum returning anytime soon. It’s quiet in the flat, I’m looking at the telephone…I want to ring him, tell him to come and see me, and make mum fall in love with him again! I pick up the telephone and dial his number…It begins to ring. “Hello”? A voice answers. Last edited by Simlish3; 02-09-2008 at 11:06 PM.. |
