Default The Truth

Hiya, welcome to the Truth.

This sort of comes after two of my other stories, Murdered with Love and Unexpected. Even though this should be readable without having read those first, I still advise you to do so, in order for everything to be clear.

Enjoy.

Chapter One

http://i213.photobucket.com/albums/lalalaateTheSuperKat/snapshot_742be641_349e4d7a.jpg

He woke up, in what appeared to be a car. Sitting on the backseat, he had a clear view of the world outside the car. It was snowing. In front of him were a man and a woman.
“How can you stay calm like that?” she yelled. “We’re about to die!” He blinked a couple of times. Die? Where the hell am I?

http://i213.photobucket.com/albums/lalalaateTheSuperKat/snapshot_742be641_749e4da0.jpg

Then he caught sight of what they were approaching.
“Look out!” he screamed. “You’re going to hit that tree!” They both ignored him.
“Well,” the man continued. “It doesn’t really matter anymore, now does it?”
“Yes it does!” he exclaimed. “We’re gonna die!”

http://i213.photobucket.com/albums/lalalaateTheSuperKat/snapshot_742be641_749e4e25.jpg

Both people didn’t seem to realise he was sitting in the back of the car. Their conversation went on, but he was too much in panic to hear what they were saying. Then they drove into the tree with an amazing speed.

http://i213.photobucket.com/albums/lalalaateTheSuperKat/snapshot_742be641_f49e5375.jpg

“Argh!” He shoot up, clutching his chest. The cat jumped off his legs. Just a nightmare. A faint light fell in through the window, and lighted his room, even at this late hour. Of course, it never gets dark in a city.

http://i213.photobucket.com/albums/lalalaateTheSuperKat/snapshot_742be641_549e5356.jpg

The cat loudly meowed, urging him to get out. He got out of his bed and rearranged the sheets. He then quickly put on some clothes, and went into the living room. Turning on the lights, he saw the small room was exactly as he’d left it earlier.

http://i213.photobucket.com/albums/lalalaateTheSuperKat/snapshot_742be641_b49e504d.jpg

He turned on the television, wondering if anything interesting had happened. Instead of the news that he’d expected to be on, some sort of soap was being broad casted. He glanced at the clock. 3:41.

http://i213.photobucket.com/albums/lalalaateTheSuperKat/snapshot_742be641_549e50c9.jpg

The cat jumped against the table, observing the figures on TV.
“I’m sorry, but that’s not staying on.” He turned the TV off again, much to the nerve of the cat.

http://i213.photobucket.com/albums/lalalaateTheSuperKat/snapshot_742be641_949e5075.jpg

His eyes fell on some files on the chair. Johnson and Mill, the tag read. He sat down and opened the file, taking out something smaller. The accounts of their deaths.

http://i213.photobucket.com/albums/lalalaateTheSuperKat/snapshot_742be641_b49e51bc.jpg

Valentina Johnson and Alex Mill died in a car crash, as result of driving into a tree. They were fleeing from the police. Numerous-
“Car crash,” he muttered. Could it be?

http://i213.photobucket.com/albums/lalalaateTheSuperKat/snapshot_742be641_749e5115.jpg

The cat was licking its paw, unaware of the discovery its owner just made. Coincidence, he decided. He closed the book. As he did so, a photo fell out, landing on the floor. He sat down on the floor and flipped it around. It was a picture of Johnson and Mill after the crash.

When he managed to look past the blood and burned flesh, the little that was still recognizable of their faces were uncomfortably familiar. They’re the people from my dream.
“Not good,” he whispered. The cat looked up and meowed.

Chapter Two – Just a phone call

http://i213.photobucket.com/albums/lalalaateTheSuperKat/TT4.jpg

He grabbed the phone, dialing the number. He heard it ring one, two, three times before it was hastily picked up.

http://i213.photobucket.com/albums/lalalaateTheSuperKat/TT3.jpg

http://i213.photobucket.com/albums/lalalaateTheSuperKat/TT8.jpg

http://i213.photobucket.com/albums/lalalaateTheSuperKat/TT5.jpg

“What?” the voice on the other side of the line snapped.
“It’s me.”
“Yes, I figured that out. Do you even know what time it is?”
“Yeah. 2:31 AM.”

http://i213.photobucket.com/albums/lalalaateTheSuperKat/TT6.jpg

“OK Mr Vampire, you better have a real good reason to call me.”
“I do. It’s about that case I’m working on.”
“That murderer and cop that died in a car crash? I read the file. They’re quite something.”

http://i213.photobucket.com/albums/lalalaateTheSuperKat/TT7.jpg

“Yeah, them. Look Leah, I want you to find out everything you possibly can about them.” There was a silence, and then a small cough.
“You already have that information. As a matter of fact, I’m quite sure you’re holding it right now.” He looked down at the file he’d closed his fingers around.

http://i213.photobucket.com/albums/lalalaateTheSuperKat/TT2.jpg

“That’s all?”
“Hm-mm.”
“Well, there’s got to be more. This file is incomplete.”
“I’m sorry, that’s all there is.”
“Can’t you find out any more?” She sighed.
“Not the legal way.”

http://i213.photobucket.com/albums/lalalaateTheSuperKat/TT9.jpg

“Then the illegal way. Just get me everything about it you can.”
“Okay. What interests you so much about them anyway?”
“Hm,” he rubbed his chin. “Nothing in particular.”

http://i213.photobucket.com/albums/lalalaateTheSuperKat/TT10.jpg

“Fine. Thanks for waking me up, by the way,” she mentioned, the sarcasm dripping from her voice.

http://i213.photobucket.com/albums/lalalaateTheSuperKat/TT11.jpg

“So-” She’d already ended the call. He sighed and put the telephone down. He grabbed the file. “Just a phone call,” he muttered, before taking out the photo once more.

Warning: Includes some blood and dead people.

Chapter Three

http://i213.photobucket.com/albums/lalalaateTheSuperKat/TT12.jpg

“So once more, why exactly are we here?” Leah asked. She didn’t sound too happy.
“To visit someone who may be able to provide us with more information.”
“And why are we crawling through the mud and snow in the garden?”
“Shh!” he hissed, not taking his eyes off the house.
“I just don’t get why we’re doing this,” she continued, whispering. “I mean, we’re allowed to just go in and question her. And yet we’re trying to get in unseen through the back door.”

http://i213.photobucket.com/albums/lalalaateTheSuperKat/TT13.jpg

“Well,” he muttered, wiping some mud off his shirt. “There’s something about this all that just doesn’t feel right. Just look at the house. There’s dust everywhere and those windows haven’t been cleaned in months. In fact, I don’t think anyone has been inside that house for a long time.”
“Maybe,” Leah sniffed. “Or they just can’t do those things anymore.” That’s a slightly unpleasant thought.

http://i213.photobucket.com/albums/lalalaateTheSuperKat/TT14.jpg

“Let’s go in,” he suggested. They crawled the last metres to the back door, and then got up. Leah softly pushed against the door. It didn’t open. She threw a glance at him, and he nodded.
“Miss Newt, this is the police. Please open the door!” she shouted, while knocking. “Please open the door!” It remained silent.

http://i213.photobucket.com/albums/lalalaateTheSuperKat/TT15.jpg

Leah coughed. “Please look away, will you?” He did as asked. He heard a BANG and when he looked again the door was opened.
“Oops,” Leah said. “The wind must have thrown it open.” He grinned and they both entered the dusty house.

http://i213.photobucket.com/albums/lalalaateTheSuperKat/TT16.jpg

“Miss Newt!” he yelled, and opened a door to the right. It took him to a bedroom that could use some cleaning too. Nowhere was a trace of Felicia Newt, though. He was about to open a second door, when he heard Leah shout.

http://i213.photobucket.com/albums/lalalaateTheSuperKat/TT17.jpg

“I think I found her!” He hurried back into the hallway, and then through an open door. The living room. Leah was kneeling on the ground, next to the sofa. She looked up when he neared.

http://i213.photobucket.com/albums/lalalaateTheSuperKat/TT18.jpg

“This is not good,” she mentioned. “Someone was here before us.” He took another step. Felicia Newt was lying in a puddle of half-dried blood, cold and dead.

*****

http://i213.photobucket.com/albums/lalalaateTheSuperKat/TT19.jpg

“Found something yet?” a voice behind him asked. They were going through all of Felicia’s stuff, which was more than expected.
“Nothing. Looks like whoever killed her also removed anything that could be of use to us.”

http://i213.photobucket.com/albums/lalalaateTheSuperKat/TT20.jpg

“Brilliant. Another day gone to waste.” Leah closed the drawer she’d been going through a minute ago. “I suggest we go back and leave this to the local police.”
“Hm.”
“What hm? I don’t like that expression of yours, it can only mean trouble.”
“I was thinking,” he said while sitting down on the bed.

http://i213.photobucket.com/albums/lalalaateTheSuperKat/TT21.jpg

“That’s new. Did it hurt?” He sighed.
“There’s someone else we can try.”
“Please tell me that person lives close.”
“Well, not exactly.” Leah slammed a second drawer shut.
“We get paid double for any hours we make after work time, right?”

Chapter Four

http://i213.photobucket.com/albums/lalalaateTheSuperKat/TT22.jpg

“Who are we actually visiting?” They’d been driving through half the country for the last two hours, and Leah was getting ever grumpier.
“Sarah. Mill and Johnson’s daughter.”
“I thought you already questioned her?”
“That’s right, but I’ve got a couple of new questions.”
“Couldn’t you just call her?”
“No,” he simply answered.

http://i213.photobucket.com/albums/lalalaateTheSuperKat/TT23.jpg

Just when she was about to reply to that, he saw they’d reached their destination.
“Here it is,” he said, stopping the car.
“Here?”
“Yup.” He let his eyes slide over the rows of houses. Nothing much had changed since last time he visited.

http://i213.photobucket.com/albums/lalalaateTheSuperKat/TT24.jpg

“Fine.” Leah opened the car door and he followed her example. Outside, it was still snowing, and there wasn’t a soul on the streets. He started to regret the fact his coat was still hanging over a chair back home.

http://i213.photobucket.com/albums/lalalaateTheSuperKat/TT25.jpg

“It’s the second house from the left,” he instructed Leah. She walked up the steps and he followed.
“It looks empty,” she mentioned.
“That doesn’t say anything.” She knocked.
“This is the police! Please open up!” For the second time that day, no answer came. “I don’t like this, Rick. It’s the second time today no one is answering us, and I don’t feel like finding another body.”

http://i213.photobucket.com/albums/lalalaateTheSuperKat/TT26.jpg

“Well, there’s no going back now.” He placed his hand against the brick wall. “Please open the door.” She sighed and kneeled to look at the lock. Bare minutes later the door was opened. They walked in.

http://i213.photobucket.com/albums/lalalaateTheSuperKat/TT27.jpg

Inside, things were nearly the same too. Except for some magazines and several pencils that were spread out across the room, nothing had changed. He started off at one side of the room and Leah at the other.

http://i213.photobucket.com/albums/lalalaateTheSuperKat/TT28.jpg

“I don’t see anything here, Rick,” she said after a while. “Except that this Sarah has some seriously ugly paintings.” She raised her brow at one of them.

http://i213.photobucket.com/albums/lalalaateTheSuperKat/TT29.jpg

“Well, I do see something,” he replied.
“What?”
“Why don’t you come over and look?”

http://i213.photobucket.com/albums/lalalaateTheSuperKat/TT30.jpg

He kneeled in front of the wall. On the white paint were some dark red stains. Leah moved to his side of the room.
“Looks like they got here before us again, and left without a trace.”

http://i213.photobucket.com/albums/lalalaateTheSuperKat/TT31.jpg

“Well, not entirely without a trace.” He turned around. “What do you mean?”
“Apparently they left a message for us, right here.” She pointed at another piece of wall. He got up and took a closer look. With a black pen someone had written two words.

Nice story but for a while I wasn't sure whether the first guy was male or female. I think its because of the creepy model-perfect Sims faces. They always make guys look like women.
