I'm running ok with the game with shaders set to high by default, I'm unsure of what your display card is capable of doing or why you can only run dead space on low shader settings. Check can you run it and see what it say about your display card.

If you can easily run dead space then I am miles ahead and glad I went as far as I have with my upgrade at the start of the year.

I have a quad core processor, ati radeon 4850 series (pcie2) and 4 gb memory.

I dont see how you cannot run this game on medium or high shader settings without the game crashing to the desktop, its not low memory or lack of porcessor power, I don't think it is a display card problem either.

Check the resolution of your windows desktop and in the game(this might help solve the problem).

Make sure you have no infections or software that could effect the running this game on your pc(I do not mean you have, but it is worth checking and is all I can think of). Different types of infections cause different problems.

If this doesnt work search online and see what you can find yourself.

Let me know how you get on.

well it not infection done defrag all the virus scan etc checking for infection routine turned up empty even checked deadspace exe was allowed on my firewall which it is

and resoloution is same on my desktop as on game 1400 x 900 and tried lowering resoloution on both still crashed like hell

ea support said disable aa on my nvidia control panel which turned to be fruitless still get the same

pretty much dead in the water here as loads peopel have this black screen problem yet no sort of real fix

and being no sign of ea interestd in patching isnt particulary uplifting lol
only can wait till someone fianlly finds a way round the black screen crash
cuz its exactly what i get

OK heres what I propose, we both look online for a solution and if we come across anything we can post it and state the result (positive or negative) as I am out of ideas as to what is causing this. I know there is a black screen for 30 seconds with kanes wrath if the game resolution isnt the same as the windows resolution.

Check the display refresh rate is set to the same in dead space as windows as mine was set to 1024 by 768 70 hz and I changed it to 60 hz and no more adjustment by my tft screen. If the black screen is only when the game starts it might be what is causing it, but the game crashing need more investigation.

It could be xp, however I didnt have any problems playing dead space on xp, I now play it on vista ultimate x64 using a quad core q8200, 4 gb of memory and an ati radeon 4850.

Which version of xp are you using?

Check that all your drivers are up to date again to make sure and check can you run it to see how your system should run dead space, that might give you a pointer to the problem or it might not.

Do you get an error message when the game crashes?
