Hi Guys,
A friend of mine is taking this course dealing with Marketing...and he has to turn in a report that talks about how video games are marketed. More specifically, he had to choose a scenario. He decided to go along with the following scenario: A company that develops interactive video games has offered you a position as an internal game development advisor. Your job is to provide feedback to the development team on the content that is being implemented in the game and also to offer fresh ideas as to what games the company can work on based on your research as to what the popular demand is from the targeted audience. On your first day on the job, your supervisor asks you to brainstorm a completely original IP (intellectual property...or a new game). So your homework is to come up with an idea to make a new game. You decide the genre and other details that will make up the game based on what your research tells you is popular. Okay...so he decided to make a game in the horror/action genre, because he really likes how Dead Space is turning out to be. My question for you guys is this: what do you really like about Dead Space? What details about this game have you read about that have really caught your attention? Is it gameplay? The storyline? The graphics, blood, gore? Anything else that you want game companies to know that you like to see more of? What would you change about Dead Space if you had the opportunity to do so? On another topic, what would your game be if you were tasked to make a game in the horror/action genre? What will your influences be, meaning, what movies or other video games have influenced you to come up with your idea? These are just some questions that he would like people to answer who are interested in this genre.... Thanks for the time! |

Well this is probably too late for your school project, haha, but I'll answer it anyway.
I am a huge fan of the survival horror genre (Resident Evil, Silent Hill) and the science fiction genre (Halo, Half Life, Mass Effect). This game is one of the few to actually merge the two and for me that's really exciting. It also happens that "The Thing" is one of my favorite movies of all time, and this game seems to draw a great deal of inspiration from that movie. As far as the gameplay is concerned, the extreme sense of isolation and the whole feeling of having no idea of what is going on really sets the mood and pulls you into the story. Also, the complete lack of a heads up display and a game-pausing inventory system makes the game feel much more realistic. In my opinion a great game is one that pulls you in and can actually get an emotional reaction out of you (in this case... getting the **** scared out of you! haha). So answering your question about what exactly it is about the game I like (story, gameplay, graphics, etc), I would say that it's hard to answer that question before the game is actually released, but in my opinion they are all equally important and so far they all look promising. |
