Escape VTO.

I am having a problem, when flying the VTO, when I crash land, how do I escape? I have tried clicking F and E and all the other keys to try to get out, but it seems that I'm stuck in the plane. Surely there must be some way to get out of the plane, or do I just stay in the plane till I get rescued? So far, what I end up doing is restarting the level, which is annoying, so, any help to escape the plane will be appreciated. Thanks.
