Default PC Version - Game fails to start

Well, the game was working for about 2 weeks after purchasing it. I had upgraded the trial version. It crashed occasionally, but I wasn't too worried about that, since it was infrequent.

Then about a week ago, the game failed to start. I clicked the shortcut, but nothing happened. The process manager showed it starting and then just disappearing.

I tried re-installing and, to my joy, it worked! I played for a while, and then had to do some work. I turned my pc off and went off to do my work, and when I came back, Burnout would not start again.

I looked through the application data, and deleted all my saves, shader caches and everything. It worked but, again, after restarting my pc nothing. I tried deleting my save games again, but it didn't work again.

I installed the latest drivers, since i'd been using more stable 175.80 drivers, instead of the new ones that tend to make most of my games crash.

That did nothing, so i re-installed and made it work again. It crashed within about 3 minutes of playing, and when I restarted it didn't work again.

This is extremely frustrating, and I was wondering if anyone could help. The event viewer gave me this message:

Faulting application burnoutparadise.exe, version 1.0.0.1, faulting module burnoutparadise.exe, version 1.0.0.1, fault address 0x00073d23.

and my system specs are as follows:

Nvidia 8800GTX 768mb
Intel Q6600 Core2Duo 2.4ghz
4gb ram

Any help would be much appreciated.

Have you been installing the patch for the game? There is one that can be found at Gamespot. I don't know exactly what it is supposed to do though. If you have been installing the patch, try reinstalling and try to run the game without it and see what happens. From your error message it looks like you are using the patch.

I pretty much have the same set-up as you.

I tried without the patch, and it's the same thing.

Have you tried going into the game configuration and setting eveything to low before trying to run the game? I'd also make sure it has the right resolution settings and no AA too. My configuration that it defaulted to was the wrong one for my set-up.

I've asked the PC team about it and we didn't see it during any of our testing. I've also asked the development team and nobody has seen anything like this so it looks like a very isolated case. It almost sounds like the executable is becoming corrupt, maybe due to anti-virus software ?

I would take a copy of the executable, when it's working and carry on as usual. When it becomes non-responsive I'd use a tool to binary difference the bust .exe and the copy you took. If they are different then you know that something is corrupting files.

There are a number of reasons why this may be. Virus present on the system, anti-virus software being over zealous or even a hard drive that is breaking up and developing hd errors over it. Unfortunatelty this issue, ultimately, looks outside Burnout.

Okay. Thanks very much for looking into it for me. I thought it was most likely due to my pc and not burnout (One of the best ports i've ever seen btw)

Thanks for helping.

I'm one of GMasters friends. In an attempt to fix this, I sent him my exe, which has had no problems whatsoever, so in theory, this corruption would be alleviated until a restart, however, when he copied the exe over to the program directory and started it, it was square 1 all over again. I think it might be a dll or something to some effect, but sending each dll and exe over to him would be too much hassle really. Just my 2c.

One possibility would be to use a checksum utility (like this one) that calculates MD5 checksums (unique numbers that should match if a file is identical) for all files in the Burnout installation folder and compare both listings.

Hi
I have seen a similar error which only happened when i updated F-secure anti virus software on my Vista pc. The game worked fine before that but now the exe wont even start. The error i received was as follows which makes me think it could be an issue with the exe and Anti virus F-secure

Faulting application BurnoutParadise.exe, version 1.1.0.0, time stamp 0x00000000, faulting module BurnoutParadise.exe, version 1.1.0.0, time stamp 0x00000000, exception code 0xc0000005, fault offset 0x015d7a82, process id 0x13d0, application start time 0x01ca3dd8c3058b3c.

I run
64 Bit Vista Home
Nvidia 9800GTX 1GB graphic card
Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550
8GB of ram.
