Default Crashing when the Criterion browser pops up

So yeah...I mailed the support about this already but I thought asking the community might be a good idea aswell.
So, whenever I connect to the paradise city server, my game crashes instantly when the criterion browser would show up and it gives me no real error message, just a simple "BurnoutParadise.exe has encountered a problem and needs to shut down" with a 5 mile long error text which noone understands (the error text file also automatically deletes itself after I close the error message). The game itself runs perfectly fine in singleplayer.

I already tried everything to fix this issue...I even had help from a friend of mine whose job it is to fix computers...I updated all my drivers, updated microsoft framework, flash, java, everything. I even ran the windows repair...nothing helped.

So, since I'm out of ideas, I hope someone here either has the same problem as me or simply has a good idea on how to fix this problem. =/

Thanks in advance
Ryujo

Could you give us more information? Some computer specs (video card + driver, Windows version + service pack, how much memory) and the exact error message (can be found in the Event Viewer -- Start -> Run... -> eventvwr -> Application log) would help a lot!

Yeah sorry, totally forgot to add that.
I'm using a GeForce 8800GTS 640mb and the 181.22 driver. (newest one)
OS would be Windows Xp Home SP3.
1,5GB memory (Not the best, but the game itself runs fine in singleplayer, so meh....)

The error message is in german, I hope you can still get some information from it:

Fehlgeschlagene Anwendung burnoutparadise.exe, Version 1.0.0.1, fehlgeschlagenes Modul burnoutparadise.exe, Version 1.0.0.1, Fehleradresse 0x00139c77.

Weitere Informationen über die Hilfe- und Supportdienste erhalten Sie unter http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

I'll try to translate it:

Failed Application burnoutparadise.exe, Version 1.0.0.1, failed module burnoutparadise.exe, Version 1.0.0.1, error adress 0x00139c77.

More information about help and support at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

Something like this... x)

Some further things I have tried without success:

-Disabling Anti Virus
-Disabling Windows and Router Firewall
-Adding portal.burnoutweb.ea.com to IE trusted sites
-Setting default browser to IE
-Turning off IE pop-up blocker
-Reinstalling the game on my c: partition in default locations
-Disabling Sound Card
-Disabling ATI AVStream driver
-Setting the exe to have affinity with only one CPU core.

Just a thought - have you tried downloading and running the latest Direct X 9.0 redist? - Not just the 9.0c latest, but the latest as in August 08? Download is here.

Not promising anything, but worth a try...

I was using the August 08 re-distributable before installing BP, since installing BP some of the files have updated to today's date.

I've discovered how to play offline (delete the save game information from local settings to get prompted for profile information again on start up, hit backspace instead of providing log in information), and the game itself runs fine. Just any attempt to touch the server crashes it (if you attempt to select any online events for example once you're in game).

Entering the incorrect password for my account gives a 'non matching account information' or something similar, and doesn't crash. So it's presumably managing to reach the EA server at some point to verify the password.

edit: Re-applying the Aug08 re-dist ontop of the DVD installed files didn't help.

I tried everything that could get to my mind to fix this problem...not even the EA support has any more ideas now. However, I'm gonna get a new HDD soon (monday or something) and I'll see if it works on a freshly installed OS (will be Windows XP Sp2). I'll let you guys know if it works or not...if it does it's most likely some software interfering with the game.

Yep. I'm trying to think what else it could be. I'm using an edimax wireless PCI card (ralink RT6 chipset), standard O2 router (thompson speedtouch) with cone NAT enabled incase any of that is a common factor.

edit: Just tried disabling my wireless connection to check, and again the error message is different (servers not available), suggesting that it's managing to connect to the servers normally, but then crashing.

How did the fresh OS install go Ryujo?

I've been communicating with support as well over this issue. The latest information was to remove the save game files and manually uninstall/reinstall
Quote:
You will need to remove all the game save files and start the game again. To remove the game save files, please open the "My Documents" folder. In this folder, you will find another folder with the name of the game, remove the game folder to remove the game save files
For anyone else trying this, don't forget the save game files are actually in a different location: $Drive:/Documents and Settings/$user/Local Settings/Application Data/Criterion Games/Burnout Paradise/

However, for me it did not fix the issue. Also don't forget to use the deauthorise link before installing so as to maintain your activations.

Gonna take a bit longer untill I get the new HDD, and yeah, I did the save game thingie aswell...didn't fix anything. x)

Anyways, as soon as I get the new HDD I will just put xp sp2 on it and right after that burnout, I'll let you know if the problem is still persistent.

Just bumping this thread.
I recently downloaded the demo for the game. Everything works fine. I can play the game for the full allowance with no problems but as soon as i enter the stupid criterion browser / store the game crashes with the same error as yours.

I am actually trying to purchase the game and it crashes out. Surely EA would make it so it crashes AFTER you have given them money... so perhaps they have a new strategy here.

Anyway... bit annoying.

Same here. Well, for me whenever that in-game browser popup my game crash. Only way to play this game for me is to disable internet connection and avoid to make in-game browser popup while playing
