I only had a PS2 and therefore the last Burnout i played was Burnout 3: Takedown.
I was very excited when i heard the transition to PC, however, having received the game, i'm a little disappointed on three fronts. 1: Where are the cars? Paradise city must be purely pedestrianised because I seem to only come across 1 car every 10 seconds. Where are the large swathes of traffic i can weave in and out of? It makes the game seem a bit empty really. It also makes planning a showtime crash difficult. 2: Crash mode.. what's happened? I used to love piling into a junction and seeing the utter carnage i created at the end. Car wrecks disappear in Paradise meaning that all my artistic destruction is removed as soon as the camera turns away from it. The endless boost in showtime means that crashes get stupid and almost never ending. I managed to effectively travel from one end of the map to the other skipping over cars that seemed to be aiming for me? Again, a little bit of Burnout that should have been copied from the original. 3: Lastly, racing in Burnout is similar to competing in the Paralympics as an able bodied person, it's just too easy. Even in marked man when i'm the enemy, cars carefully rub up against me like they want to carefully touch and caress my paintwork. Why not let the AI rage, why not let them try to blast me off the road, it would be more fun than the seemingly pedestrian paced races that occur. Don't get me wrong, i love paradise, but i feel Criterion have tried too hard to reinvent the game. Taking a real world example, people wouldn't try and reinvent the wheel because, simply, it works. They optimise it and add new features likes ice spikes. There is no need to try and reinvent modes in Burnout because what previously existed worked a treat. I will still play Paradise but in the words of Mr. Ben "Yahtzee" Croshaw, i have this little niggling demon in the back of my head telling me i'm not having as much fun as I could be. Hopefully a dev might respond to this

I don't have any explanation for the traffic, and yes I do miss it... but Showtime mode is good for when you want to see the roads PACKED with traffic.
Crash mode is gone because it would call for loading screens, which Criterion hate with a burning passion (no pun intended). Marked Man... you just need to get a much better license, because the early events are designed for newbies. |

IMO crash mode was tedious and linear.
Sure you left a path of destruction but it was a highly scripted game mode, once you saw the solution there wasn't much more to get out of it. Thats another thing criterion wanted to get away from, linearity. Side note: I've seen the PC version on my friends PC and theres about as much traffic as there is on the 360 (which I own) or PS3 version (another friend owns). In some cases there was more, so I dunno what to say, I know there are less cars when using a bike.

I agree about crash mode. Less linear or not, Showtime is awful compared to the excellent crash modes in Burnout 2 and 3. I'd much much rather have scripted crash junctions that I had to try over and over again to get a better score on (and take turns in multiplayer - good times) than bounce through the city doing what feels like zero damage to cars that feel like tin foil.
I really hope criterion brings back a proper crash mode in the next game. |

Like I've mentioned before. The old Crash modes were like challenges. You had to analyse the scene and plan the best way to rack up the dollars. Showtime seems to be less of an thinking challenge and more of a Luck challenge. You can flip a car one time and onle get a few thousand dollars, and the next time 5 buses spawn in front of you.
Also, for completing a certain amounts of crashes in Revenge, you were rewarded with a Crash Breaker, which can change the entire outcomes. Paradise doesn't seem to have the same appeal. Ever since finishing all the Showtime events, I have not once used that feature.

I had burnout revenge. My sister loved the crash mode on it, she beat me everytime. But then the Xbox broke with burnout revenge inside it

BO Paradise is awesome... but its not that bombastic as Revenge & co. There is speed and adrenaline - but there is not much action as it was before. Think about that... Last edited by 0wictor0; 23-08-2009 at 12:00 PM.. |
