Default Burnout Review Thread

Well, the first review that i've seen is out.

IGN: Burnout Paradise Review

They gave it 8.8. Of course, their main complaint was that you couldn't restart races. A feature which the entire community also complained about the instant the demo was released.

Will criterion be 'fixing' this with an update in the future do you think?

Anyway, the game is looking pretty great. Definitely a purchase at my end .

i actually like the idea of not restarting a race. good idea that you have to drive back. This makes the game more enjoyable.

You don't have to drive back to the beginning of an event, if you've failed it. You can simply enter another event at any intersection near by (or anywhere else in the world, for that matter).

As the game is non-linear, you can compete in any event at any time (the difficulty of the events is determined by your progression through the game), so why would you bother driving back to the beginning of an event if you could just try the one around the first corner?

Also, events can be repeated, as far as I'm aware (but the difficulty increases) - so you'll never be in the situation where you only have limited events available to you.

Some people may like to go through the events systematically but personally I think that takes the fun away from the game. I prefer the idea of doing jumps and driving around then suddenly stopping and starting a random race before continuing again.

on one side it is good that they did not "add" the restart option, now they have a reason to make another BurnOut to include it in that one ^^

I agree. I prefer the free-roaming.

the freeroaming is perfect, but it would be handy for those who like to restart

I think OPM3 gave the game a score of 89 (out of 100).

Alright, one short. But how on earth can ANY game be given 100/100?

I guess you're right. There is no reason to start the same event again if you fail.

Edit: Am I going to have 'infractions 1/0 (0)' next to my name forever .

Even though there is no restarting, the game is actualyl a lot of fun. If you lose, just start another event close by. It makes it feel so much more realistic and random. Very interesting design choice that actually worked.

I agree, it works beautifully and I hope that other games and developers will be inspired by it .

It doesnt work beatifully at all. Maybe in the beginning but when you want to get your Elite license its a straight pain in the *** that you cant restart a race.

You cant just start a new race at the next junction because that race is allready completed. I just need a few more races to complete and if a fail I do have to drive back.

IMO it's the worsed thing that ever happened to the burnout series.

How do I put this in a clear and noticeable post.

RESTART IS OPTIONAL!

LOL, If a restart option was available, it would be optional. Therefore, if you thought that restarting an event took the fun out of the game, you could just continue on with your driving without having to do so.

If you were one of those people who did like the idea....you just select "Restart".

Simple really! Bring out the update, kill the people wlalalalaan (therefore having no logic)!

Phenom
the problem occours when you fail the race and want to try and beat the race again. instead of just restarting it makes you drive all the way back to the start point to try the race again in which i find this fact rather annoying on the longer races

Default Free roam

The whole point of burnout is that you can free roam. I think the fact that you can not restart is good because you can drive in the lovely streets back to where you was. Plus it adds more gameplay time and you may find that one of them cars you want to unlock might speed past on the way back.

The option of both would be a nice additional.

After playing the game online last night I have some more feedback. I really don't think the open world works with online races.

In most of the races i was in, at least half the players got completely lost on the way over to the finish line, and didn't finish.

Offline, you can check the map as often as you like to make sure you're going the right way, but this isn't an option online because while you're checking the map, everyone else is speeding off towards the finish. Using the in-game indicators that tell you which way to turn isn't that helpful either, as if you're using the fast cars, by the time the indicator is up on the screen it is far too late to do anything about it.

Several times while I was racing, no icons at all were on my minimap. I had no idea why, and it meant that not only could I not see where I was supposed to be going, but I didn't know which way my car was facing after a turn (unless i started to drive down a road for ages to see which way the map was moving. I did that, and it turned out i was going the wrong way). I eventually decided that I had lost the race no matter what so I opened the full map, looked at it, and then closed it again, only to see that the icons had all miraculosly reappeared. It is a bug and it needs fixing. It only happened twice during my 20 or so races but it's a bit of a show stopper.

Another problem is the traffic. It appears out of nowhere a lot of the time online, and it isn't a problem in freeburn. However it is a huge problem if you're trying to race. I don't think anything else needs to be said about that as it's fairly obvious what the problem is.

Another problem I had was that the actual online racing seemed buggy. Several times i came speeding up behind an opponent and rammed into the back of him only to find that he carried on as if nothing had happened and my car went flying off the road into a wall. The opposite also happened to me several times. I'd be driving along and I'd suddenly get a takedown out of nowhere.

All in all, my foray into Burnout online was a frustrating and unrewarding one, and I don't see myself trying it again any time soon.
