A new season made all the more refreshing by the signing of several scouted players to boost the team to that ever higher standard that every club strives to reach. The game started off with hopes and dreams of a successfull season for both clubs, Michael Owen had an early breakaway which saw Wurtzen give away a free kick, Owen kicked it hard and along the floor which was just tapped out by Assenjo. With Notts morale up, J. Dykes was able to make a break and once the keeper cleared his lines, Dykes looked up and just chipped it just out of the keepers reach, 1-0 for Notts. The safety net came in the 53rd minute when Bevan sprinted past two defenders, looked up and slotted the ball into the top corner. A corner kick provided Newcastle with a chance to equalize but no such luck as Fruili cleared the ball with world class accuracy to Galvan, who carried before Novo Ramirez made a clever run into the box where it was crossed and a beautiful header into the back of the net ensued.
