Barcelona 08/09; team of the decade?

Team being the keyword here. We all know that on paper, Barcelona have an exceptional squad with depth in nearly every spot of the pitch. The star players like Messi, Henry, Eto'o and Xavi don't do the headlines justice, because it's very much players like Iniesta, Yaya Toure, Dani Alves, Marquez, etc. who make up the real value of such club. They've amassed a total of 72 points in 29 matches, with a possible 99 points in total before the seasons end. They have also scored a total of 85 goals with 24 conceded, a 60+ goal differential which is a feet in itself.
As we look back on the past decade, and pick out teams like the treble winning side of Manchester in '99, the glimpse of the galacticos in Madrid of '02, the surprise package that was Porto in '04, the mighty Chelsea side of '05, and even Barcelona that same year who won the champions league led by a special player by the name of Ronaldinho; does Barcelona of 2008-2009 surpass these great teams? Let's see how each team stacks up =)
1999 Manchester United
2002 Real Madrid
2003 Porto
2004 Arsenal
2005 Chelsea
2006 Barcelona
These teams did alot. They won domestic titles, continental titles, international titles, broke records from total points, goal difference, undefeated season, they created comebacks, and were special in their each own - they were superb sides that were invincible on their day.
But how does the current Barca side stack up on paper? Let's have a look:
2009 Barcelona

Its very hard to compare them. In terms of pure quality of football 2009 Barca is equal to or greater than any of the teams. However, what it comes down to eventually is winning trophies. If you don't do that then you don't deserve to be compared with the best. The current Barca team may be excellent football wise, but do they have the mental fortitude to propel themselves to glory? We'll just have to wait and see.
PS. I think the 2006 Barca team was a 4-2-1-3. Kudos to you on your football sense and extensive knowledge. Great topic for debate.Posted 12-04-2009 at 07:55 AM by Gorayfle

Ludovic was one of the best players in Europe during the champions league run with Monaco in 03/04 - he was a key part of Barcelona's champions league run two years later playing 29 La Liga and 8 Champions League matches. Which begs to differ anything you have to say about Messi, a player who was just about as useful as Aaron Lennon that year.Posted 25-04-2009 at 09:37 PM by Matieo10
