Well overall I was extremely proud (oddly) to actually watch this event. I woke up intending to write an essay for Uni, but I got hooked on watching the inauguration around 4-6 hours before it even started. I didn't intend to watch it as I don't have a TV in my room but I'm glad they managed to help out the people who might not have a TV or access to it. So many people were watching it during work on the CNN & Facebook, it was good.
I planned to watch the proper ceremony with the swearing-in from my room but instead I ran down to the bar on the campus joined the many who were watching it on the TVs. I had to feel the emotion and atmosphere, and I felt great and energetic whilst sitting down on the steps (lack of seats) directly in front of a screen. I wasn't a real Obama supporter and didn't know which party I should support (despite taking American Politics), but seeing this really built up an emotion for Obama. Maybe I got carried away with the crowds but I was cheering as much as the people around me, clapping and shouting. Afterwards I returned to my room and continued watching, finding it extremely hard to change over to my work for a 'break'. I watched some episodes of something else when the parade ended and returned to the inauguration, and properly stopping watching it at 2:30am. Pure addiction, but a day I'll always remember. It was brilliant.
Sorry if it's long and pointless but I needed to vent my feelings somewhere, and telling my flatmates that would be more difficult than many would believe lalalalala.
Various people have said Obama hasn't done much and he's getting praised, and people are too obsessed with him but I'm sure he'll be able to do something to reassure their madness. However is it a bad thing to be so crazed about him? To an extent is it, and could be just a bit less energetic (like people getting his face and his sayings tatooed etc...) but after being reminded of FDR today (and what he achieved) I realised even more so that this is what Obama has achieved and did achieve even more so today, he has given the Americans somethhing the Americans need - something new and that fresh stream of pure energy, youth and confidence to trickle through their dusty, withered and tired souls. Something to invigorate them. He might not have done that much in terms of policies and a real change of direction so far, and might not do so in the future however he has completed one important and critical objective - brought the American public (most of them) to life, given them the hope they need, given them reality of the immense struggle ahead that he and America cannot do it alone, and has ultimately given them and millions of others something to aspire to if not now, but in the near future.
Phew.
