Did anyone see the "PC Gamer Top 100" Announcement?
I always find it impossible to choose one game, when I'm asked, "what is your favourite game of all-time?" or to put my "top ten games of all-time" into order of greatness...
How do you compare different genres?
How do you compare an MMORPG (on the PC) to a Racing game (on a console) or a puzzle-game (on a handheld console)?
How do you compare the 2D platform game that you loved when you were an 11 year old, to the survival-horror game that you were almost obsessed with when you were 19, or the FPS that you just could not stop playing when you were 20!?
I suppose the decision is easier (for me, at least), in this particular instance, because the question is not, "what is your favourite game of all-time?", it's, "what is your favourite PC game of all time?", so the choice of games is limited to PC titles...
"I'm not an avid PC gamer (yus, I'm a console-boi :shifty:)", I think to myself, "so this shouldn't be too hard..." and then I begin to think about all of the games I've played and loved, on the PC...

Grim Fandango
Half-Life
Counter-Strike
Command & Conquer: Red Alert
Command & Conquer: Red Alert 2
Command & Conquer: Generals
Championship Manager 2002-2003
Championship Manager 4
Worms Armageddon
GTA III
The Sting!
Chaos Legion
Sid Meier's Sim Golf
Unreal Tournament 2003
Civilisation III
Neverwinter Nights
Guild Wars
17 games.
...so, If I had to choose just ten of these (and I do, if I want to take part in the vote), I have to cut 6 games. Easy! I'll cheat!
Half-Life and Counter-Strike came together in Half-Life: Generation - down to 16. :teeth:
Command & Conquer: Red Alert, Command & Conquer: Red Alert 2 and Command & Conquer: Generals came together in Command & Conquer: The First Decade - down to 14. :teeth:
Cutting four wouldn't be too hard; if only it were that simple...
Neither Half Life: Generation, nor Command & Conquer: The First Decade are available for selection. Foiled!
Okay, let's see if any of the other games on my list of 17 aren't available for selection. Yup, 4 of them;

Chaos Legion
The Sting!
Sid Meier's Sim Golf
Unreal Tournament 2003
and the Championship Manager games are grouped; that takes me down to 12;

Grim Fandango
Half-Life
Counter-Strike
Command & Conquer: Red Alert
Command & Conquer: Red Alert 2
Command & Conquer: Generals
Championship Manager (series)
Worms (series)
GTA III
Civilisation III
Guild Wars
Neverwinter Nights
I guess that means I need to cut two games...
Command & Conquer: Red Alert
Red Alert 2 and Generals were much, much better. I can live with cutting Red Alert from my list.
GTA III
I consider this to be a PS2 game (because I played it more on my PS2 than I did on my PC), so it would be unfair to include it in this list, I think.
I'm sorry, GTA III and Command & Conquer: Red Alert, but you are only my 11th and 12th "favourite PC games of all-time (respectively, according to PC Gamer's limited choice), good-bye... :cry2:
I'm finally down to ten!

Grim Fandango
Half-Life
Counter-Strike
Command & Conquer: Red Alert 2
Command & Conquer: Generals
Championship Manager (series)
Worms (series)
Civilisation III
Guild Wars
Neverwinter Nights
Now for the hard part: putting them in 'order' from 'favourite' to 'least favourite.' This may take a while...
[a considerable amount of time passes]
...okay I think I've finally settled on a list I'm 'happy' with. I put them in the order of "which I'd rather play" - I compared each game to the one above and below it - and after a lot of shuffling about, I settled on this;

Grim Fandango
Half-Life
Counter-Strike
Worms (series)
Championship Manager (series)
Command & Conquer: Red Alert 2
Guild Wars
Command & Conquer: Generals
Civilisation III
Neverwinter Nights
So there you have it! My "top ten PC games of all-time (according to PC Gamer's limited choice)"!
If I wasn't restricted to the selections on the PC Gamer website, and I was allowed to 'cheat' my real "top ten* PC games of all-time" list would look like this;
*where 10 = 13

Grim Fandango
Half-Life: Generation
Worms Armageddon
Championship Manager 4
Command & Conquer: The First Decade
Guild Wars
The Sting!
Chaos Legion
Unreal Tournament 2003
Civilisation III
Neverwinter Nights
Championship Manager 2002-2003
Sid Meier's Sim Golf
Done! Eesh. My head hurts. I hope that this was easier for you, and I hope - I beg! - that there isn't another "favourite game of all-time" question asked any time soon...
