Default OMG what a difference decent FPS makes

I just thought my PC was a little low spec for BF2142 (AMD X2 3800+ o/c to 2.5ghz, 2GB PC3200, 7800GT 256mb, WD Raptor 74gb) so accepted it was a bit laggy and running around 20-25fps most of the time.

I stick in my Seinnheiser headphones last night to see if the sound is better (which it is by far) and all of a sudden my FPS is up to around 80-90 dropping to 50 with lots of action. Unbelievable difference - took out 5 people with one Voss clip and ended up top of server with like 139 pts in Camp G - was only beaten by my commander.

Now Im even more addicted to this game lol. Everythings is so much easier and smoother

Weird though - all I can imagine is there is some performance problem with the sound codec used with 5.1 surround setup that doesnt happen when using headphones.

Yup, when playing online the greater fps the better - yours being a prime example.

Are you telling us that because you plugged in different headphone, your FPS went through the roof?? Sorry, im not sure i buy that.

I used to get 25 fps on my laptop running 1 gig of RAM. I then decided to change the resolution to my laptops native res of 1440 * 900 on the shortcut for BF2142 and my FPS went way up and my skill improved massively as it was so much easier to play. Then with 2 gig of RAM it became much more stable but no more FPS.

So, you saying that you made no other changes other than plugging in headphones?? Please xplain!"!!

I know it sounds weird but I have no other explanation for it. I had Cambridge Soundworks 5.1 speakers plugged into my mobo. I changed to my headphones (so disconnected 1 speaker jack and connected headphones). At first a few probs with sound wrong way around i.e. walker on left but sound on the right. Also when I did a revive nothing happened soundwise. So I went back into XP (Ive got 2142 installed under Vista 32 Premium but not got around to trying it yet). Checked sound software and saw it was still picking up 6 speakers. I disconnected headphones and reconnected and it recognised them.

Loaded up BF2142 joined a server and at first thought it was just a really good server. Then I typed renderer.drawFps 1 and saw my FPS was around 80-90. Unreal.

Im assuming I maybe inadvertantly had it on some codec like EAX on uber high quality that my setup didnt like and hogged a load of CPU power. Thats the only explanation I can think of.

Either way my FPS is wicked now and the game is so much more fun now

That is wierd!! Maybe it was EAX settings?

Anyway, glad you can enjoy the game more now, its so hard playing with low fps, made me feel like a lalalala player until i got upto 60 fps then thought, wow, i can play this game!!

Want being funny in my earlier post btw!

My fps is awful .

I can hardly play at all on (highly) populated servers. But it runs perfectly offline. I wonder if i can make the resolution any lower than 800x600...

I'll give that a try .

I'm the same. I don't have the best fps but its stable which I think is the key. I also have a laptop on 1440 by 900 and getting true full screen 2142 helps so much! What kind of laptop is it?

Mine is a Sony VAIO VGN-A417S

256 mb radeon x600 graphics
1gb RAM
Intel Pentiun 2.0ghz
1440 * 900 XBLACK LCD SCREEN
running on xp

Hi mate,

I have a fujitsu-siemens amilo xi1546
core duo T2400 1.83ghz
2 gig ddr2 ram (upgraded)
ATI X1800 256mb
1440 *900 high def screen
XP - None of this vista kakka!! - Seems to kill everything!!

Certainly not the best laptop ever made and about 13 months old now but seems to do the trick on med/high settings with low shadows / light.

Yeah, I just splurged on a Geforce 8800 GTS and boy howdy is the game nice.

Full on everything and the only thing that visually impacts my frame rate is if someone is spamming the Titan shield with the opposing titans anti-air guns and I'm behind it the shield, other than that I get great FPS at 1600x1200 and I'm definitely doing much better in the rankings too, been scoring gold and silver medals lately.

I'm well aware that its my graphics card that's the problem. Its not even on the list of supported cards.

However, the card has got me through 2 years of BF2, and right up until that 1.25 patch/punkbuster update (you know the one i'm talking about), BF2142 ran fine online as well.

After that patch/pb update, the game has become unplayable. I cannot play Titan mode, NS has started freezing when i try and join servers, and i've been reduced to playing Camp Gibraltar exclusively, and i cannot even play that servers with more than ~40 people on them because it just gets so choppy that i can't even aim.

I'm not endlessly complaining about it because i'm well aware that my card isn't officially supported, but i still find it very frustrating because, as i said, it used to run fine.

It was only after loads of 'updates' that i've been unable to play properly.

When that happened i went back to BF2 for months. but recently i've been wanting to play 2142 again, and basically, i can't .

Oh yeah, i have a (supposed) 8mb BT broadband connection.
