I have recently been suffering from the freezing problem.
Symptoms :

- game freezes halfway through loading a map, forcing hard reset
** or **
- game freezes after 2-3 minutes of play, forcing hard reset.

This has started happening over the last two weeks. Up until then the game ran fine.

Operating system
Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2
BF2142 + Northern Strike, patch 1.25
NOD32 Anti-virus

System specs
Asrock 939 Dual Sata2 Motherboard
AMD X2 4200 processor
ATI X800XT Platinum Edition AGP GFX card
On-board motherboard audio (Realtek AC97)
2gb 3200 DDR RAM
4mbps internet connection

Drivers & Windows updates all up to date. I have tried numerous fixes for this including :

- closing down all other background tasks from task manager before running BF2142
- manually updating Punkbuster
- deleting the radial.cdb file from the game folder
- installing the Windows update patch as recommended by DICE

But none seem to work. Bizarrely, the same bug is happening with BF2 as well. So I have nearly £100 worth of software which I've paid for but cannot use. All other games and applications on my machine run fine, without problems.

Happened irregularly on my old pc ( I put that down to the gfx card overheating).

Built a brand new pc , windows xp sp2 fully patched and up to date. Only software on it is Office 2003 pro (fully patched) and BF 2142 - 1.25 + NS

yesterday I couldnt ocnnect to the EA server at all once i selected my soldier. it would drop me back out to the log in screen. Today I can connect to a game server 50% of the time, otherwise it tells me connection lost.

Once I start playing it freezes at random intervals but never plays longer than 10 minutes.

New system:
Intel E6600 cpu
7900 GTX (latest drivers)
Asus P5W Deluxe
2gb DDR2 ram
80gb sata hdd primary OS and games
2x250 sata hdd raid 0 , file storage not used for bf2142
Case: antec 900 plenty of cooling so thats not issue.

Symptom:
game freezes and sound stutters and cycles

solution:
about half the time I can ctrl-alt-del and end task (bf2142.exe end process works best or dumprep.exe end process will kill both of them)
rest of the time its a hard reset (thanks EA, thats somethign I *never* do if at all possible!)

Only evidence is application log:
Application Hang: event ID 1002
Hanging application BF2142.exe, version 0.0.0.0, hang module hungapp, version 0.0.0.0, hang address 0x00000000.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

but this is not always logged. (actually only once in the last day since it started hanging frequently).

I have: updated punkbuster using pbupdate.exe from the evenplay website.
Turned off VOIP (would really prefer if this could be solved and keep voip)
reinstalled the game and patched fully
Looked for radial.cdb but it doesnt exist on my pc (should it?)

Cant understand why this has started all of a sudden. it ran fine for three or four days when I installed it first.

solved it.

turned out I didnt uncheck the "hide system files" tickbox , I only showed hidden files. radial.cdb was the cause of the freezes. just played for over an hour without any freeze.

oh, and to the guy who suggests removing all windows updates because you pc worked fine when you bought it emmmm yeah. good plan. your pc will be hacked to lalalala by every virus/rootkit and trojan out there but at least you'll be able to play 2142 without it freezing (for as long as the pc turns on ok for you).

ha di ha, Decion, but, I don't trust Microsoft enough to allow their Updates to keep my computer secure, I use this new fangled gizmo called a third party firewall. oh and what in the hell would a hacker want to take from my computer, they don't hack for practice or fun, they hack to gain money or to settle disputes. and I would have to download all these viruses and trojans. I mean you'd think I would notice when my HDD space was filled with viruses moron.....

I really do pity the people who put this much trust into Microsoft.....

So, you heard the kid. Everyone uninstall all your windows updates. Every single one of them. I could use something to laugh about.

Hi,

I got the same pb, sometimes in the game, it freezes and i got the Vista Cursor on the screen, I have to open Task Manager and close BF2142 Memory Error and it will close the game too and put me back on Desktop screen.

I never get the chance to read what the error message said.

My game freezes on the loading screen when the bar is halfway. Reinstalling twice didn't help it happens on 1.25 and 1.40.
It last happened about two months ago
I don't know if its my hardware or software
Don't suppose any one has an answer?

I had the same freezing crashing problem and resoloved it simply by running AA at 2x rather than 4x. Re-install did work 1st time but after few games froze up again. Been playing for 3 weeks and no problems.

System:
Dell XPS Gen 4
Pentium 4 3.8 Extreme
Geforce 8800GTX
4GB RAM DDR2
500GB Sata

Hi, hopefully someone can help me with the issue that I have.

Basically my game will either freeze completely and I will need to reset or I will hear the error sound effect. this seems to happen after a few map rotations (the memory error occurs generally on a map change) The bf2142 memory error that I get is as follows:

"memory.dll:chunkPools::free Fails, should not come here!"

I have tried all the usual (DEP, disabled VOiP, changed my sound to just hardware, changed it to software, lowed it to low, changed all my video options to low) none of which seem to have made any difference. my system spec is as follows:

System
---------
A-Bit KV8-Max3 motherboard
1GB of memory
Athlon 64 +3200
Sound Blaster X-Fi
Radeon 1950 Pro (AGP)
Windows XP SP2 (fully upto date)

Drivers
-----------
ATI Driver = 8.391.0.0
Creative Driver = 5.12.8.1201

(I have also tried running my system with different memory i.e. 512, 2GB and i still get the error)

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Regards

SuttY

Worked ok for a night then back to same old probs again! does EA and Dice officially recognise this problem?

Will the new patch have a fix in it?

It isnt punkbuster or the 1.25 update that is the problem. It is actually a windows update that coincided with said update. I system restored my computer because of a virus, and lo and behold, 2142 now works. If you cba to take such drastic measures to get the game working, fine, cos i have no idea which windows update it was that causes the problem. Try doing the following:

uninstall BF2142
uninstall ALL windows updates, every single one, dont leave any at all, it cant do that much harm, when your computer was brand new it worked fine right?
reinstall bf2142
reinstall 1.25 patch (or other latest patch because i know that my BF2142 didnt work with 1.20 patch either when i downgraded)

change some graphics settings and start up the multiplayer server you wish

HAVE FUN!!!!

hope i helped
How do you uninstall windows updates?

I had the same problem, BF 2142 crashed - Blue screen of death - then hard reboot.

I actually realised that Firewall, i use Norton, actualy doesnt allow punkbuster access to the internet, and causes it to crash.

I turned off my Firewall, and i was able to play for more than 4 hour's without a single crash.

First time i finished a round without losing points.

Strange: This only happens on Punkbuster-enabled servers.

Win XP Home with latest drivers and updates

nForce4 Mainboard
2GB DDR 400

Re installed windows on my backup drive put all the usual mobo, sound and graphics drivers back on only thing I did different to my last reinstall was to not allow any windows updates and since then 2142 has run without a hitch.

Its not an ideal work around but at leased I can play. Lets hope they sort this conflict problem with the next patch.

This is basically what I did witht he reinstall and I too have experienced the map freezing again and more often than not having to completely power off!!!

BTW, what is AA?
And if I also delete radial.cdb, what is this file for?

Love 2142 but getting really annoyed spending an hour a night trying to get into a map.
