Default Punk Buster Issues

We've been reading the numerous comments from people getting kicked by the recent Punk buster update for 2142. We're continuing to investigate with Even Balance but the following procedures have resolved the issue for some:

Manual PB removal and reinstall

Update firewall and antivirus to allow PB subcomponents

If you've tried both these things and are still getting issues do please let us know by posting the details in this thread as it will help our and Even Balance's ongoing efforts to resolve this issue for everyone.

It's also worth keeping an eye on the BF 2142 Punk Buster news page for updated information straight from Even Balance.

Do either of you have dual core PCs?

This may help you out a bit :-

Here are some steps you can take to try and resolve these issues:

Make sure that if you are running firewall and/or anti-virus software that the Battlefield and Punkbuster executables are in the allowed list and not on the block lists
The services that need to be allowed for Punkbuster are 'PnkBstrA.exe' and 'PnkBstrB.exe'
Note: If you already have the executables in the allowed list, please remove and re-add them to the list
Try deleting the Punkbuster folder and reinstalling:
1. Click on My Computer
2. Click on the C: drive, or wherever you have Battlefield 2142 installed
3. Click on Program Files
4. Click on Electronic Arts
5. Click on Battlefield 2142
6. Right click on the pb folder, then click Delete
Download and run the install for Punkbuster found here
If none of the above steps work, try visiting the Evenbalance help site found here

Please avoid posting in all capitals.

It maybe you have other issues with Punk buster if the message is now different. What message is appearing onscreen for you now?

Hi There, the firewall fixes mentioned at the start of this thread worked for me - thanks for the info... As polite feedback I'd comment that this update was a significant change in the behaviour of the app and will break the game for a lot of people with default configs. Better communication between EA and Even Balance and sharing of the output with players ahead of the change would make for a much better experience for us paying customers.

Love the game - keep 'em comming

My Punkbuster issue is that the newer version is using 30%+ CPU cycles with the result that my BF2142 frame rates online are just to slow to play any more.

I have contacted Even Balance support and they have confirmed that 30% is normal!

This is all very well if you have a dual /quad core system but I use a P4-3.06 CPU and as a result my frame rate is in the low 20's now.
Mind you this is with my Network software turned off or it would drop down to 13fps (While playing BF2 SF online is typically 35 -70).

I even set the game to the lowest settings 800x600 with all IQ options turned down and still fps is only around 26-38fps.

For reference by setting the CPU to 1.7Ghz (minimum requirement) the fps is 8-14.

What particular issues are you having with 1.25 jawlord49? DICE are working on a known memory/CPU usage issue that's causing crashes and freezes, is that what you're seeing?

Hi All,

Thanks for posts trying to solve this problem,

''I am experiencing real problems with BF2142 update 1.25 = Loosing Key Packets Df01000-01 = Punkbuster Kick and no play at all. I am running a dual core processor and 2 firewalls, they have worked well up until this point. I have 'allowed' PnkBstrA + PnkBstrB but the problem persists and seems unaffected by my current actions. Has anyone managed to get rid of this gremlin successfully without any recurrence? Gutted at the mo!

regards,

I'm getting punkbuster licks as well. I have tried to reinstall punkbuster but it still occurs, most of the time it just saylalalalalabuster and the ok clink on box but a couple of times an error message has appeared that says PB ignoring inqueries. I have also had two blue srceen crashes while playing and the game is suddenly really laggy and slow.

My system:
Elitegroup Computer Systems KA3 MVP ver. 1 motherboard
AMD Athlon 64 X2 5200+ CPU
4gb RAM 2x1gb crucial Ballistix tracer, 2x1gb us modular cold fusion
Western Digital 7200 rpm SATA HDD
2X Visiontek X1950 PRO Graphics Cards in Crossfire
Apevia Iceberg 680 Watt PSU
Windows Vista Home Premium

This only started since this week, last week it has been fine.

im also having this problem and im 100% positive its related to vista ive tried every single step running the game and PBsetup in aswell as PBsvc in admin mode reinstalled PB 100s of times reinstalled BF2142 3 times and it still occurs its quite infuriating that i paid 50 bucks for this aswell as 200 bucks for vista just to put up with stuff like this, but EA has little to do with this its more on the fault of Punkbuster and Microsoft im hoping that it gets resolved in the near future till then ill just reinstall Microsoft XP if you have that option i would suggest it to everyone else.

Ive been helping a clan member with hilalalalalabuster problem, i dont know if anyone knows this but his problem started when he installed a new razor copperhead mouse, he had to make sure the latest firmware and drivers were installed.. otherwise he was just getting punkbuster kicks as soon as he went into a game.

Hi all,

On again about thilalalalalabuster issue, it sucks bigtime. I have read all the posts and taken actions that members have suggested to try and resolve the issue. This has included deinstall of Punkbuster, reinstall of Punkbuster and double checked opening my firewalls to PnkBstrA + PnkBstrB. The problem has just mutated, now I don't get 'Losing Key Packets' message at all but get kicked from every and any server after 1 minute. This is brutal. Don't have a clue what to do now, any help would be greatly appreciated. I have read other posts from members that believe it is Windows Vista related - this is not the case as I run XP Prof SP2. Nor is it a firewall issue or an issue with mouse drivers - this is to the best of my knowledge so far. Could this be a virus we have all picked up that is acting solely on the Punkbuster exe? Am not really that clue'd up on the technical side, just a stab in the dark! I have only got one game for my PC, now BF2142 seems f"c&3d up!!! Help needed to get back to the fight.

Thanks

I have read all through these posts and am having the same problems trying to help my friend get back in to 2142! I Need My Wingman!!!!!

-He has XP
-No Firewalls (apperenty)
-Uninstalled
-Reinstalled

we have tried all the suggested solutions available
nothing is working!!

Personally I think he got hacked by punkbuster
One thing is odd though; He can still play BF2......

For those using BitDefender AntiVirus 10 Plus

Rather than turning off realtime Antivirus protection (the bit that's causing additional slowdowns with the new punkbuster) just go into the AntiVirus menu then CUSTOM.
Click in EXCLUDE Path from Scan, click NEW Item
You then use the browser to go into the BF2142 game directory, select the pb directory and click OK

Now all the packets that link to this directory are ignored. You can do this as many times as you need ie. for other games using punkbuster.

..........................
To make sure you're running the correct PB version just look in \Battlefield 2142\pb\dll
You should see wc001703.dll

you might have thought that EvenBalance would assume we all HAD virus checkers, anyway, none of these work for Zone Alarm. I've made all PB elements "trusted" and given them free passes through the firewall, so we shall see what happens.

meanwhile, I get kicked from 3 out of 4 servers, and if I join, I get kicked after 30 seconds for "missing packets". sux

I also suspect something nasty at the uPnP router, but that can be dealt with later.

basically, after 1.25 *everything* sux big time

Dunno if this helps at all to shed some light on problems with PB. Iv been playing the demo 2142 for a while now (Im gonna buy the game at the end of the month but i cant right now!)

Im occasionally kicked by pb for no apparent reason. Does it kick you for lag? Im using broadband but im based in the UK so its gonna be a higher ping than most guys from the states.

Im not a tk'er altho when i first started i made the occaisonal mistake - normally because i havent passed my pilots license for air transports yet.

Does pb randomly kick? I dont remember installing pb as part of the demo or remember reading anything about pb during the installation.

Some servers are fine for me to play on for hours some i can play for 10minutes or more before i get kicked. Its not really a regular occurence as far as i can remember but its enough to be noticeable.

Thanks in advance for your help

You can view the Punkbuster A & B logs in C:\WINDOWS\system32\LogFilelalalalalaBuster

Not a solution but might help finding the problem.

If it's all up to date then you should see this:
PnkBstrA v1020 Service Started Successfully
PnkBstrB v1.703 (BF2142) Service Started Successfully

I've noticed a few servers are still using 1.701 which gives me issues.
