Honestly, add a line in the patch EULA that states patching will void the minimum requirements from the original game... the FoW on that map looks ridiculous. Stop being afraid of draw calls.

As the game is coming up to 4 years old we have to patch the game based on the machines specs we released with. Its just an unfortunate situation with a game as old as BF2.

Patching is a voluntary process; voiding the original release machine specs on patching shouldn't be a problem, legally or otherwise.

Patching is voluntary in itself but is a requirement if you want to play on ranked servers which is part of the game package.
When people buy BF2 even for their old machines they have the right to be able to play on ranked servers and gain stats. If we start increasing the minimum spec there will be players that can't do that.

I would personally love to increase minimum specs on Battlefield to best use my own gaming rig at home but what I want and what is allowed is different

We are talking about a single map here. To play on ranked servers and gain ranks, there is no *need* to play on a map that was released long after the original game.

So you are saying that people who buy BF2 and run on low spec machines shouldn't be able to play all the maps we release? Thats a bit harsh

why isn't it possible to put some maps from the modding scene into an ranked game?not all, but some?
is it too much work or where is the problem?

You made the specs higher when you released 1.3 making the minimum RAM recommended to 1GB. Take a look at The Iron Gator, that must be your smallest yet highest demanding map. I don't think anyone on minimum spec can run that but I've never seen anyone complain about it.

It's been well documented that the FOW used in maps like shonghua cause eye strain and as said looks stupid, a map released today with it is just dumb. Other maps in BF2 have no FOW and play great, so why use it.

Because the map complexity on urban maps requires more draw calls which increase the hardware requirements and Bazajaytee says they can't do that. I disagree, and I *don't* think it's harsh to say that people who buy BF2 and run on low spec machines shouldn't be able to play all the maps they release after the original game.

Like we did with BF2142 you mean?
Adding maps to become ranked isn't as easy as it sounds, well game wise it is but a lot of work has to be done behind the scenes to accept scores from those maps.

Min spec machines, FOW is used to make the map run on those specs.

Put it this way, if YOU had a min spec machine and went out and bought BF2 after 1.50 came out. You wouldn't complain that you couldnt play all the maps on your machine?

Honestly? No. I'd be buying an old game. I would know it is old. I would know that things evolve and there might be new developments that would be incompatible with my old hardware. I would not complain; the original game is still 100% playable out of the box.

The Question is: Are there really any players left, who have min spec machines? I believe the absolute majority of gamers are updating their computers regularly and 99% could easily handle more viewing distance.

Have you seen the stats on Steam's survey recently?
So many players are using machines that are practically pre-historic

You see what the poor minority is holding back? my rig could eat BF2 on max and not even know about it, yet it is held back by the poor.

An excellent question, in my view.

Baza, isn't it high time that the mods had their heyday and were give full support and access to the ranked scene too? The best ones were very well balanced - better in fact than stock BF2 - and authorized mods shouldn't break anything in terms of stats progression.
