Default The Punkbuster/disconnect thread.

May as well start a new one as noone seems to have answered the old one.

Here we go again.....

I've given up trying to play BF from my own home due to the punkbuster problem (and yes I tried everything suggested.) I now try and play in my lunch hour from my office nearby (I work alone). It has a better internet connection. Better machine. Clean install. No spyware - yada yada yada - no I'm not posting specs. I've been in IT for 22 years and was building my own PCs before they were even called PCs and when Bill Gates was still writing the original DOS. OK? OK.

Now I just "there is a problem with your connection" 8 times out of 10. And still am having to reinstall punkbuster with every attempt.

Now my question is the same one I've been asking EA for ages. It's a yes/no one.

Are EA putting any pressure on the creators of punkbuster to solve the obvious issues that those who live more than a mile from there telephone exchange get which was introduced in the new punkbuster version a couple of months ago?

Are you? Aren't you?

Or because the problem only happens to some people are you ignoring it due to the fact that you have our money in your bank account already?

Is anything being done or not?

Yes or no. Easy.

You'll only get connection errors if your broadbeans connection has crapped out, that or the server you're playing on is having its own interweb problems.

PB connection errors generally get you kicked with a specific PB kick error.
Are you wired or wireless. You can always stream a radio station while playing, the stream should stop when you you're having connection problems (turn the stram buffer size/time down)

Can you elaborate a bit? I havent heard this before.
The problem with the PB update (1.7, i think) I have heard most about is the incompatibility with software overclocking utilities.

Hardware/software issues all ruled out.

I do live in the middle of nowhere and can only get a 1Mb connection. This has always been more than enough until the (lalalalalabuster upgrade. Since then I've downloaded/updated/reinstalled/reran/restarted the B client every time I try to play. No dice. Still get the B stuff. Done the security updates. Built a new computer, reinstalled op system, changed firewalls, removed firewalls, changed cable, reinstalled game, done it all again, and again, and again, and again.

I've borrowed other machines no dice. Taken my machines to other peoples houses and it all works fine. I've prodded, thumped, kicked, screamed, jumped in the air, ran in circles, swore.

Since the PB update I've been boned. Before that happened I could run BF2 through 2 firewalls without stopping anything.

Now the problem may be that the update meant that you needed a better connection than before. In that case there is nothing that can be done.

The question I put to EA again and again is "can I expect, ever, an update from punkbuster which will alleviate this problem or is there no plans to address any connection issues".

I'm not even looking for help anymore, I'm just looking for an answer to that question so I can decide whether to remove BF2 from my hard drive and start looking for another game to play.

It's a yes/no thing.

I'm not angry or anything. I'm just frustrated.

This is what I was talking about in the previous message.
http://forums.guru3d.com/showthread.php?t=226934

Even though this thread is from June and only talks about 2142, it is relevant now because BF2 only recently went to this same version of punkbuster (~3 weeks ago iirc)

Note that the problem is not just with using Rivatuner. ATITool and a bunch of other ones will cause PB to go crazy. Rivatuner 2.04 has developed a workaround, so update if you are using an old version.

At least then I'd know someone at EA had read the thread.

Honest. All I want to know is if something might be done in the future. That's all.

Default pb

this sounds daft but i get similar probs from time to time the only thing that works for me is to wipe all traces of pb,bf2 of my pc then leave it for a few weeks then reinstall it but i dont patch it i play the unpatched vers for a couple of days to make sure theres no probs then i patch seems to work for me tho really gamers shouldnt have to mess about like this if u can get your self xbox 360 as its the future of gaming me thinks pc gamers are getting a bit left out in the cold (yes i know theres games out for pc that are good but with all the probs that go with em like having to patch and update id rather just put game in and play without waiting to see if you can get manage to play online or the regular crashes that really shouldnt be there with a final release ) as for bf2 i love the game just so annoying that theres so many probs with it but when its working its great ,maybe its time to think about somthing better than pb ,dont know what tho (maybe a man with a big stick) also im in an area with no cable and my bb speed is 4meg but i started with 1 meg and had no probs playing bf2 and now even with 4meg i still from time to time get YOUR CONNECTION TO SERVER HAS BEEN LOST i guess its something we have to live with..

My home connection and both machines have been forgotten. I don't even bother trying to play from home. I now play on the connection/machine I use for work and still get the connection refused message about 4 times out of 5.

Incidentally, today (Saturday 13th Oct) I can't even see any servers. It takes an age to connect and when I finally do I go to BFHQ and it says I've got over a million points but no unlocks? (I'm only a sarge btw).

Is something dead?

I've got that same problem too. Not that I mind having some outrageous score, but it aint mine, can't connect to any servers, takes forever to pull up the wrong dets for my account. Couple of my mates can't connect either.

Not to dampen your spirit or anything Brigabotica but you will never get a straight answer from EA or Pukebuster regarding just about anything that is about BF2 or Pukebuster itself.
I have tried many times with EA support and sitting with Pukebuster tickets in vain.
Best thing is just to shrug your shoulders at them and have a coffee

My boy and I care having the same problem with PB. We use the same BB connection and never had a problem until 2 months ago...

I also use xfire to communicate with him and other BF Buddies! My auto update function was on - his wasn't.I now have version 1.1.2965-797.0 whilst he is stuck on 1.0.2442.0.

Can anyone PM me please - just to advise me of how I can get him on the same version so we can both see the same list of servers and got on with enjoying a good bit of team play?

Cheers!

Been playing BF2 since the days of old (day of release BF1942). Have most expansions and mods.

Never had a problem with PB tbh. Anyway heres some links that may be of assistance.

PunkBuster For Players

PBSETUP

Easy and automatic
PunkBuster Online Countermeasures

failing that try support@evenbalance.com discription of your problems etc etc etc. I am sure they will send you back away to fix the issues you are suffering.

Thx Kam

I had constant problems with punk buster. The solution in the end was to go into Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services and then find PnkBstrA and make sure it's running and set to automatic. If it's not then double click on it, change the startup type to automatic and press Start.

I recommend this as your first port of call every time punk buster kicks you off of places as it seems to enjoy switching itself off.

My PB won't let me play ether! And I have tried to re-instal PB everytime before I enter a server. Going to try to get my money back. How can they make a game with a program like PB that wont let you play? Oh I forgot, they like to make games that cointains things like PB, SecuROM and other types of malwares -.-

stewy disallowed names is a punkbuster feature set by server admin. It usually means you have an illegal character in your name and you need to change your name or your clan tag has been banned from that server.

Do you have PBSVC as well? You can get it here: http://www.evenbalance.com/downloads/pbsvc/pbsvc.exe

The fact it works fine at other peoples houses kind of suggests its your connection thats having troubles communicating with Evenbalance servers.

Have you raised a supprot ticket with Evenbalance? If you haven't you should as they support their own products and know more about why it maybe causing you the problems it is. http://www.evenbalance.com/troubleti...t.php?game=bf2

Not all the messages that mention PB are actually caused by them detecting, they just do the kick. Its likely to be the @ in your name causing the problems. Also have the server owner check to see if they have disallowed any characters on the server as it could be locally solved.

Visit the forums of the server/clan you get that message. It is for sure a local problem which has to be solved with them directly.
The pbserver on that gameserver uses the feature pb_sv_badname .

PunkBuster For Server Administrators

Quote:
PB_SV_BadName [grace_seconds] [text_filter]
Adds a bad name to the list of bad names for the server to disallow in player names
As Baza allready mentioned it is probably the @ or the = they have set.
pb_sv_badname 5 =
pb_sv_badname 5 @

In the Bf2 option menu you can choose internet type.
T1 or 256 kbps.
Choose 256 kbps, since it requires less bandwith
