This is how Air Superiority works.

In the center of the map there is a rather large area that you need to keep clean of enemies for a certain amount of time. So, if you make sure your team has more planes alive in there you will gain air superiority and make the other teams tickets bleed down. Then if they take air superiority your team will bleed.
