I already posted this in some other thread but I thought I'd make it a new thread... By copying my post onto this.

I have a theory which should be interesting.
From watching watched Dead Space: Downfall, how the Marker repelled the Necromorphs I believe it was created by an ancient civilisation to seal the virus.

And the paranoia must be part of the infection. On the living, it turns them against each other and it mutates the dead. Both the paranoia and transformation are part of the infection.

And since there are more than one marker, there must be several "prisons" of the infection and it likely wont be long till more of those cells are opened. Either the markers contain the consciousness or soul of a member of that civilisation, most likely some powerful sorcerer or the markers are living beings in their own right; nevertheless they try whatever they can to get themselves back to their planets to reseal the infection.

Hows this for an interpretation?
