Championes, Championes!!
Man United were crowned Premier League Champions today for the 15th time. Even though Aston Villa beat Bolton earlier in the day, United managed to beat Fulham to secure top spot in the league for themselves. The league always looked like going to Man United it was only a matter of when would they seal it.
United started very brightly and were nearly ahead inside the first five minutes. Rooney broke clear of the Fulham defence but with only Mark Schwarzer to beat, he hit the post. They did go ahead in the 20th minute through Paul Scholes. Ronaldo went past his marker and swung the ball into the box. Paul Scholes then managed to flick the ball into the bottom corner with the back of his head.
Berbatov got his name on the score sheet just before half-time. The ball was crossed into the box and it was headed clear but only to Scholes, he volleyed the ball only to see it saved by the keeper fortunatley for United, Berbatov was there to tap the ball into the net and put United 2-0 up.
Rooney sent the party into full swing 3 minutes later as he netted his 39th of the season. Ronaldo, who was having it all to easy on the wing, crossed the ball into the box and Rooney rose above his marker to head the ball beyond Schwarzer. "We've won it 15 times" and "Championes, Championes" were being sung all around Old Trafford as they knew that they were going to win the league for the 6th time in a row.
In the second half, Man United started to ease off Fulham and started to pass it around the midfield, showing off for their fans. Berbatov nearly doubled his tally for the day later on in the half with a spectaclular bicycle kick but Schwarzer got hands to it and pushed it out for a corner. With only 5 minutes to go, Sir Alex brought off Scholes, Giggs and Ronaldo for Hargreaves, Park and Nani to give them a well deserved rest.
Man United held on to win 3-0 and the league. We caught up with Ryan Giggs, captain for the day, after the match. He had this to say about the win “I’m delighted to get another winner’s medal. Even though I have won so many, each of them are as important as the other. I have won the league alot of times but I've never won the league this early in the league and I believe that it is a record time in England. This is some players’ first trophy and hopefully they can win a lot more with United. There are some good, young players at this club and I think that they have the quality to keep winning the league and make sure the trophy stays at Old Trafford. I have a couple more years in me and hopefully I can experience days like these a couple more times in my Career. Our next target is to win the Champions league for a 5th time and that is a very realistic target for us. That is also a very big objective because it will mean that we equal Liverpool's record”
