Default Help Guide for Router settings.

This is a little short guide to try and help people try and fixed their connection issues with Games. This game in particular. There are pictures in the links but a few may have info edited out for security reasons.

First I would like to say that I decided to do this after I messed my connection up while getting my stand alone Blue Ray player’s firmware updated. The setting that I needed to use to setup the router caused my Bad Company game to not be able to connect to any game server. I was able to fix this right away after I remembered that I did mess around with the routers settings. While this was on my mind I decided to go ahead and make a little guide to try and help people with their connection issues. So I spent the past few days messing around with all the settings just to see if I could find different way to set things up and what effects they may have on the game.
So this is what I found out. (Note: That I did this for a Netgear router. It should be similar to other routers but may have different options. Until I get to my other houses I can not suggest what the other brands options may be called. I have Linksys and Belkin routers as well but both are in different houses in different states. So it may be some time before I can check them or add them into this guide. Until then others can take this as an example for the other brands and test them out if they wish. Hopefully it will help.)

First the best setting that I found was to just have the UPnP option turned off. Having it on; may cause issues if you do not set up the router right.

Summary:
Router = Default settings.
UPnP = Turn this off.
Try game.

I am going to start out with a wireless connection setup: (Note: After getting all the settings in the router set up. Go to the consoles internet connection settings and just run through the set up process again to make sure that what you did has the best chance of working. The reason being is that I found some settings that I did test would only work after doing this.)
----------------------------------------------------------

If you are using Wireless connection with the UPnP turned on.
First off you want to start by making sure that the (UPnP) is turned on. You can then just go to a setting called (Advanced Wireless Settings). In there you should see an option called (Wireless Card Access List). Here you want to click on the (Setup Access List). You will then be in the (Wireless Card Access List). You then want to turn on the (Access Control). Then hit (Apply) so that it sticks. Then you want to (Add a Device). So click (Add) which will bring you to the (Wireless Card Access Setup). The Device would be either the PS3 or Xbox 360. The name of the Device may be “- -“. You can rename it to PS3 , Xbox 360, or whatever you wish to call it is you wish. Or you can just leave it unnamed. It is up to you. Once you add the device you want to hit the (Apply) option to make it stick. You should then be able to get onto the game servers to play. Just make sure to run through the consoles internet connection setup again to make sure that it works right.

Summary:
UPnP = on
Wireless Card Access List = Turn Access Control On
Wireless Card Access List = Setup to Add the console to the list.
Make sure that all the changes are applied.
Run your connection settings in the console again after all this are done.

----------------------------------------------------------
This is some information that you may need for the following settings.

PSN
  1. UDP Port: 3658 (peer to peer)
  2. UDP Port: 6000 (VOIP)
XBL
  1. UDP Ports: 88 & 3074
  2. TCP Port: 3074
----------------------------------------------------------

If you are using a Wired connection with the UPnP turned on. I found that this requires a bit more patient than the Wireless as it can be a bit tricky at times.
First off you want to start by making sure that the (UPnP) is turned on. Then go to the (WAN Setup). In there you need to make sure that the (Default DMZ Server) is turned on and when doing this the IP Address should be set to the console. You can check to see what your IP is either from the console or under the (Attached Devices) section in the router settings. After this I did try to see if the game would play. It would not. So I then moved on the next option in the (WAN Setup). This would be the (Disable SPI Firewall). I checked it to turn it off. Now this does make your settings less secure but it does allowed the game to run. Just make sure to run through the consoles internet connection setup again to make sure that it works right.
Now that the game is running I tested its quality. It lagged and lagged hard on the above setting. So I had to then wanted to try and find a way to try a way to get it to not lag at all or at least as much. After all my testing and settings changes I found one that worked.
It is in the (QoS Setup). What I did here was to make sure that the (Turn Internet Access QoS On) was checked. This way it would utilize the (QoS Priority Rule List). Now I needed to make a rule for it. So I used the (Setup QoS Rule) option to make this rule which brings you to the (QoS - Priority Rules). When setting up the rule I decided to name this rule PSN BC. I will explain the reason for naming the rule that later down below. Now after naming it you need to select the Category which I use On-Line Gaming. For the Applications I selected Add a new Game as BC was not listed. I set my Priority on High. You can try whatever priority you wish but I just prefer it as high. Now you need to select the Connection Type which needs to be UDP for the PS3. It may be TCP for the 360 but I am not sure as I do not have a 360 handy to try it. The Starting Port should be set to 3658 and the Ending Port should be 10000. I took these numbers from the (UPnP Portmap Table). The reason being is be explained below with the reason for naming the rule as PSN BC. After this you want to click apply so that it sticks. The rule should now show up in the (QoS Priority Rule List). I would click (Apply) again in the list sections just for the heck of it. Again just make sure to run through the consoles internet connection setup again to make sure that it works right.

Summary:
UPnP = On
WAN Setup = Disable SPI Firewall
WAN Setup = Default DMZ Server On and set the IP Address to the console
QoS Setup = Turn QoS Internet Access On
QoS Priority Rules List = Setup a rule for the certain ports that are for the game. The ports can be found in the UPnP Port Table when the game is trying to connect.
Make sure that all the changes are applied.
Run your connection settings in the console again after all this are done.

----------------------------------------------------------

Now The reason for calling it PSN BC is that when you look at the (UPnP Portmap Table) while the game is running you see two devices connected to the PS3’s IP Address. The one with the UDP that has both the Int. and Ext. ports as 3658 is the actual connection for the PSN alone as that shows up when connected to the PSN. But when you go in further to try and connect to the game server itself you get the second one that has the Int. as 3658 and the Ext. as 10000 to show up. This one would be the BF BC game server to me. Who knows really though. It may just be the PSN VOIP; but as that UDP should be 6000. So I did not want to confuse anyone. So I just called it PSN BC.

I hope that this helps people. If you wish you can take this little guide as an example for the XBox 360 and for the other router brands on what to try. Now this may not help everyone. But it is worth a try if you are having issues with you connection for this game.

If you have any feed back please post it. And if you have any other helpful tips then please post them so that we can try to improve on this guide a bit.

Thanks to BioSoldier for bringing this up. I thought that I might add this in to the main post.

There are some options in the router that will cause you to need to reset your modem. It should be said that if your internet goes down when doing something in the router that you should unplug your modem for a little bit to rest it to see if it comes back up. If it does not rest your routers settings back to default then reset the modem and router again.

For those that are not comfortable with router settings then I suggest that you do not try such things until you get more use to it. Maybe read up on it a bit until you think that you are ready.
----------------------------------------------------------
For those that may have the game working. Can you post your router brand and the settings that you use so that we can compare settings with others.

Here are some links to more post in this thread with settings for other routers. I will update this as they come in from other members.

I found this site that may help people with setting up their router settings since their are many different types of routers out their.
http://www.portforward.com/
Once you select your router you want to skip the AD link and it will show you a list of games to choose from.

There is also a nice tool found on this site. It is the Port checker. You can download this tool and use it to check individual ports and see if they are open. I will show pics and explain how it works.

This is what the tool looks like:

It is very simple to use. You just enter the port number in the box, then select the protocol, and hit the Check Me.

But the thing that you need to know is that the IP address in which it is checking is for the computer that it is installed on. You can see that by looking in the upper right corner of it. I circled it in Red in the picture above.

When you forward your ports you need to make sure that the IP Address is set for the Console (XBox 360 or PS3) instead of the computer that you are using this tool on. This tool is basically being used to make sure that you set up the port forwarding right. Once you get it to say that the ports are open for that IP address you just change the IP Address in the Port Forwarding settings to the Consoles IP Address.

In this link here you can see how I set up my ports for my Belkin router. You can see that my first two for the VEOH site are set to the IP address of my computer which is displayed in the Red circle within the picture above. That is because I am opening those ports for my computer. The rest of the settings are for my PSN and BF games. Notice that the IP Address is (4). That is because it is the IP Address that my PS3 is using. My computer is using the (5th) Client.
To see what your Client number is your console you can check the DHCP Clients List within the router or look at the Internet settings info from within the Console. Your IP Address for the Console should be listed within those location.
