^Michael Carrick gave Man Utd the lead in the 32nd minute^
Pre-Match: Man United must have had the memories of the last match against Wigan in the back of their minds going out into this match in which they lost to them 2-1. They would have to clear their minds of all thoughts, go out into the “Theatre Of Dreams” and play their socks off for their team. Foster, Rafael, Anderson and Park all came into the team for this match and replaced Van Der Sar, Neville, Scholes and Giggs. The more experienced players’ legs probably needed a rest after playing most of the games this season.
The first half was the most entertaining half you’ll ever see but Man United did play well and forced a few good saves out of Chris Kirkland. The half did see the most important thing for United and that was a goal. Ronaldo had the ball on the wing and dribbled into the box he got to the bi-line before pulling the ball back to Carrick and he slotted the ball past the keeper into the far corner.
The chances for Wigan in this match were few and far between and didn’t make Foster work too hard. Man United went into half-time 1-0 up but would be slightly disappointed that they weren’t ahead by more because of all the possession and chances they had.
United extended their lead in the 51st minute with a goal of the season candidate. The ball was played to Anderson and he passed it to Rooney, he took it past one defender before smashing it into the top corner. It was amazing how he got so much power into it and he was nearly at a stand still. Chris Kirkland did get a finger to it but just couldn’t get enough on it to stop it from flying into the top corner.
Carrick and Rooney both had very good chances to grab their second goals of the afternoon. Rooney’s came on the 70th minute. The ball was passed around in the middle of the bar before being slid into the path of Rooney he tried to just dink the ball over the keeper but Kirkland got just enough on it and tipped it onto the bar.
Carrick’s chance was a harder one but he still went very close. He had the ball on the edge of the box and hit the ball very sweetly but it went a yard wide of the post. Wigan started to push forward in the final minutes trying to grab a consolation goal but just couldn’t and United ran out 2-0 winners.
