I used to play Americas Army Online constantly... great game! In that, you had to pass various 'boot-camp' trials to get access to the different classes. It worked brilliantly. eg- if you wanted to get access to sniper class, you had to do a boot-camp training course and get over a certain amount of hits/points, within a certain time, on a shooting range. And to get access to Medic class, you actually had to take a class-room multiple choice exam, all about battle-wounds and casualty priority etc.
It's a really good way of making the players fully aware of their roles within the team, and meant that people who weren't good at certain things could either work to improve their skills, and try the tests/shooting-range when they're more confident, or decide to focus on other areas where their natural skills were more obvious. It was a great system.
