Stadium History
Anfield was built in 1884 and was originally the home of Everton F.C. The unsuccesful club played at the ground until 1892, when they left after a rent dispute with the stadium managment. Little did they know this would create Englands most successful team Liverpool F.C., who were formed as a result of Everton leaving Anfield. Some 117 years next year Anfield has seen Liverpool rise to the top of every competition, and his history wherever you go.
The highest attendance recorded at Anfield is 61,905 for Liverpool's match against Wolverhampton Wanderers in the FA Cup fifth round on 2 February 1952. Anfield is known to be a fortress for Liverpool FC, and Liverpool did not lose a home league match at Anfield during the 1893–94, 1970–71, 1976–77, 1978–79, 1979–80 and 1987–88 seasons.
They also won all their home games during the 1893–94 season. From January 1978 to January 1981, Liverpool did not lose a match at Anfield, encompassing 85 games, in which Liverpool scored 212 goals and conceded 35. This feat has only ever been surpassed by Chelsea, and Liverpool broke their broke when they won 1-0 at the Bridge earlier this season.
A famous fixture of the stadium is the 'This is Anfield' sign that can be seen in the players tunnel. It tells the players who play Liverpool who they are and what they stand for. It also tells the opposition just who they are playing against.
Fernando Torres and Rafa Benitez are a few of the people that have touched the sign.
There have recently been plans to move from Anfield to a new stadium in Stanley Park, which would be situated across the road from Anfield. This new stadium will have a capacity of 70,000 people and was supposed to be ready for the 2011-12 season for Liverpool, however due to the current economic crisis this may have to be pitched back for years to come.
