1932 was the birth year of FC Metz, two amateur clubs merging to form one of the oldest professional sides in France, that of course being FC Metz. During World War II, which started just 7 years after the forming of Metz, the club were forced to join the Gauliga Wetsmark league, under the Germanized version of FC Metz, FV Metz. Despite having to play in Nazi Germany, Metz enjoyed their three seasons in the Gauliga Westmark, being runners-up in each of the seasons.
In 1965, FC Metz were promoted to the highest level of French football, what is now Ligue 1. Metz enjoyed 46 years in the top flight, yet the highest they ever got to in the league was getting the runners-up spot in 1998. That mean that they competed in Champions League qualifying, but they were defeated by Helsinki. They also won the French Cup in 1984 and 1988. In 2001 they were relegated back into Ligue 2, but their time in that league was brief, being promoted straight away. In 2006 they were relegated again, but like 2001, they were re-promoted immediately. But then they were relegated again, leaving them in Ligue 1 for the upcoming season.
They have produced many great talents over the years, including the likes of Pires, Adebayor and Saha. Yvon Pouliquen was appointed head coach in December 2007, and hopes to lead Metz back to Ligue 1
