Not really true - whether the www. is needed depends on the website (specifically its server/s), not the browser. I sometimes buy clothes from routeone.co.uk, but if you enter just "routeone.co.uk" in your browser, oops, does not work. Add the www. and it works. Good example of a poorly set up server there, really both versions should work.

But to be perfectly honest... If it's a .com website I never type www.blahblahblah.com I just type "blahblahblah" and hit ctrl+enter to let Firefox fill in the blanks.
