I find that your player has to be well onside for play to continue, I've yet to see the attacker get the benefit of the doubt. Also I find that even if you time your through-ball perfectly or even early sometimes there is sometimes a half-second delay and by the time the ball is played he's offside, even if he was onside when you pressed the button! It's as if the game is scripted and the computer is just saying 'er, no , I won't allow that, let's give the other team a goal!'
I can't recall seeing a striker drop off and allow for an overlap either, they'r always looking to burst through the backline, even players like Raul!
