Half Life games used the Havok engine, then the Source engine, which was a heavily modified version of the Havok engine, since Havok only used set animations, whilst Source used Ragdoll phsyics. Now Games like Team Fortress 2, etc, uses the Orange Box engine (I think) which is a modified version of the Source engine. So I guess that most engines are modified versions of the Havok engine, kinda like pizza. You need the base, tomato sauce and cheese* (The Havok engine), and then you can put the toppings on (the modifications of the engine).
*If you're lactose intolerant, dont count the cheese.
