Strange thread.
You don't know whether Spore is a great game, unless you have played it (in which case I apologize).
And the answer is very simple: They want the game to be accessible (i.e. not off-putting for those who go crazy over The Sims) and coherent (between the phases). If you were to find it too simple for your liking, then that is fair enough (I might even end up agreeing with you, who knows), but you should simply play other games (e.g. clones of those you mention) instead of Spore.
