Facebreaker demo review
Hey Guys.
I downloaded the Facebreaker demo earlier this afternoon and have been playing for some time now so I thought I'd put my thoughts of the game down into words.
Menu Screens. Being the first thing we see after loading the demo up, this seems a good place to start. I must say, I was initially very impressed with the menus, they look good and the font is easy to read. However, when you begin to flick through the menus it becomes very frustrating. Flicking through the different game modes available, each time you flick from one to the other (i.e 'Fight' to 'extras'), the whole screen shudders - migrane fodder, to be quite honest.
Fight mode. The only available fighting mode on the demo is a quick fight. You can pick one of 3 characters from the game to fight with - 'Ice', 'Sparrow' or 'Steve'. Upon picking your character and opponent, you must then pick a location to fight. On the demo, 'Trailer park' and 'cave' are the two available locations, my favourite being the cave. Each time you flick between the two locations, a funny voice booms the words "THE CAVE" or "TRAILER PARK", depending on which location you select which I thought was a nice touch.
Upon deciding your character, opponent and location, you are taken to the location of choice. It's here where the game gets very much like FIFA Street 3 - your character is announced to the crowd and the same voice as before booms out his / her name. A scantily clad woman then prances accross the screen holding up a 'round 1' board above her head, and the camera zooms in on her breasts and behind, which, to be honest, isn't really needed. She also squeaks and and gigglest to herself.
The fight then begins, and compared to the Fight Night boxing series, there is not a lot of skill needed. It seems like a button bashing game, with the only two available punches being 'high punch' and 'low punch'. You then box your way through a 2 minute round, with the demo ending when you break your opponent's face or the time runs out.
Create a boxer. Surprisingly, the demo allows you to upload your face onto the game and add it to a boxer and fight against the 3 available demo opponents. I used the Xbox Vision Camera to upload my face, yet a digital camera is also ok to use. It did, however, take around 20 minutes to generate my appearence once I'd taken my photos so I was expecting something amazing - For the time it took, I expected an uncanny resemble of myself to appear onscreen when it completed.....how wrong I was. The face that appeared onscreen looked absolutely nothing like me, and I was quite disappointed. Nevertheless, I continued to add clothes, hair and muscles to my boxer which was actually quite fun - there's lots of different hairstyles available such as Afro, slickback and buzz cut.
Soundtrack. Seeing as there aren't many tracks on the demo, I can't really say how good the soundtrack is, but one song I did recognize is 'Woman' by Wolfmother which is an amazig tune!
On the whole.....I can see how this game could be good, but for me it's just not quite hitting the spot. I can imagine this being a great party game to play with a few mates, but playing on your own just doesn't seem fun.
