they do... have you ever tried cycling in those mountains? I have, so i know what I'm talking about.
They have to, on the hardest stages, go over 3 big mountains by bike. They do that with a pace of averagely 16-25 km/h. Now this is actually possible, if your body is really well trained for the task, but that's only one (maybe 2) mountains. But at the end, you'll be so smashed up, you could lay down and die. The day after, your body is so sore, that you can't do anything with it.
They have to dope to perform better, or to be able to complete.
I know a lot about these mountains, I've been there myself, and I'm considered one of the best talents in Denmark when it comes to cycling in the mountains.
