It comes down to personal preference which one you may interpret as 'the best’.
Based purely on gaming the only difference that separates them is the exclusive titles (such as MGS4 and Halo3) and the subscription charge for the online multiplayer on the xbox360 which can also be subject to personal preference to which is best.
Based on this if you want a very good gaming experience on single player, multiplayer or both there is little to argue either way.
What it then comes down to is added functionality of the consoles, such as if you are an avid film watcher and would like to watch and own your own copy of HD blu-ray movies then the ps3 may be considered to be a good choice, whereas if you would like to rent a HD movie then the upcoming film store on the xbox360 would be a better proposition, until ps3 adds that content.
Both consoles now contain HDMI connections on all models and will upscale DVD movies to HD when used so there is no difference there.
Other functionality difference is the web browser on the ps3 which doesn’t feature on the xbox360 and the user upgradeable HDD that if you were going to fill and therefore want to upgrade your hard drive then the ps3 may then save you money in the longer term.
There is a price difference between the two and this will be the deciding factor in many cases but as the saying goes ‘you get what you pay for’ and even though the ps3 is more expensive, if you are going to use the extra functionality then it can be viewed as a ‘good investment’.
Therefore which you interpret as ‘the best’ is objective and will vary depending what you would like to use the console for.
