I find this hard to believe (and it's contradicted by information I've seen on consumer sites) - the reason for insisting on the receipt is to prove the age of the equipment, and since it's not been on sale for long enough for the warranty to expire I wouldn't expect it to be required.
As for not getting a receipt, I'm glad you have the presence of mind to demand a copy of the receipt with all your birthday presents. Some of us would consider that somewhat gauche. :P
