Chelsea F.C had complacency as their worst enemy against Wigan in their first game of the EPL season against Wigan.
Manager Luis Felipe Scolari made just two changes to the team that beat Manchester United in the community shield match. Riquelme replaced Deco, and Lampard joined Podolski up front at the expense of Lukas Podolski.
The obvious scoreline would have been a 4-0 win for Chelsea, but this was a different game, after just nine minutes, Wigan took the lead through Palacios, Chelsea were then shocked again when Emile Heskey then made it two goals to nil after just twelve minutes. And Chelsea were disbelieving.
On thirty minutes, it got even worse, King made it three goals to nil, and Chelsea looked out of it.
There was some good news before half time, Joe cole scored a consolation goal, and on 56 minutes, Podolski combined well with Lampard to get his second of the season.
In the 85th minute, Chelsea needed a hero, they got one, Frank Lampard's long shot flew into the top corner. And Chelsea were level, Wigan were gobsmacked.
A 93rd minute corner from Riquelme found Lampard at the near post and he tapped it home to complete an amazing first day comeback for Chelsea F.C
Scolari: "I think in the first half we deserved to lose, but full marks to the team for pulling together in the second half to win the game in stoppage time"
Lampard:" Well umm... nice to be the hero but I think if we want to win the title we're going to hav to improve alot."
So the final score at Stamford Bridge:
Chelsea 4-3 Wigan
This actually happened. It's sad lol
