Thats not a valid point. Manchester United played a friendly against Saudi Arabia club AL Hilal on January 23rd of this year. Right smack dab in the middle of the season. And I am going to assume that United played the friendly for the same reasons that MLS teams play friendlies. Money, and exposure. Here is a link to an article about that friendly.

He was referring to the guys height and weight, how high he can jump standing still, and how long it takes him to run 40 yards. Those are usually used by American football scouts when they are looking at new players. But the comment is based on how the best athletes in America don't go to play football first. They go to basketball, or American football, or baseball before football. Especially in the inner cities. He believes [and most in this country do], that America will become a force in the world's view once those types of athletes start to play football, and see the game as a way out of poverty and such. [Similar to the reasons why people in South America and Africa pick up the game. Its their way out of poverty in most cases.]

In a playoff system, this is correct. Over 30 games last season DC United were the best team. That guy can't argue that point.
