And no, the online servers do work, it's only been a few days since release which usually means that not a lot of people play online.
If you don't want to play the game online, I would either play with Offline Multiplayer or just play as one soldier with the other one taken control of by the A.I.

I remember recalling being able to play COD4, TF2, CS, The Ship, UT3 and all of them at 4AM in the morning with plenty of people. That is no excuse
