Chapter Four

“Who are we actually visiting?” They’d been driving through half the country for the last two hours, and Leah was getting ever grumpier.
“Sarah. Mill and Johnson’s daughter.”
“I thought you already questioned her?”
“That’s right, but I’ve got a couple of new questions.”
“Couldn’t you just call her?”
“No,” he simply answered.

Just when she was about to reply to that, he saw they’d reached their destination.
“Here it is,” he said, stopping the car.
“Here?”
“Yup.” He let his eyes slide over the rows of houses. Nothing much had changed since last time he visited.

“Fine.” Leah opened the car door and he followed her example. Outside, it was still snowing, and there wasn’t a soul on the streets. He started to regret the fact his coat was still hanging over a chair back home.

“It’s the second house from the left,” he instructed Leah. She walked up the steps and he followed.
“It looks empty,” she mentioned.
“That doesn’t say anything.” She knocked.
“This is the police! Please open up!” For the second time that day, no answer came. “I don’t like this, Rick. It’s the second time today no one is answering us, and I don’t feel like finding another body.”

“Well, there’s no going back now.” He placed his hand against the brick wall. “Please open the door.” She sighed and kneeled to look at the lock. Bare minutes later the door was opened. They walked in.

Inside, things were nearly the same too. Except for some magazines and several pencils that were spread out across the room, nothing had changed. He started off at one side of the room and Leah at the other.

“I don’t see anything here, Rick,” she said after a while. “Except that this Sarah has some seriously ugly paintings.” She raised her brow at one of them.

“Well, I do see something,” he replied.
“What?”
“Why don’t you come over and look?”

He kneeled in front of the wall. On the white paint were some dark red stains. Leah moved to his side of the room.
“Looks like they got here before us again, and left without a trace.”

“Well, not entirely without a trace.” He turned around. “What do you mean?”
“Apparently they left a message for us, right here.” She pointed at another piece of wall. He got up and took a closer look. With a black pen someone had written two words.
