Chapter Three

“So once more, why exactly are we here?” Leah asked. She didn’t sound too happy.
“To visit someone who may be able to provide us with more information.”
“And why are we crawling through the mud and snow in the garden?”
“Shh!” he hissed, not taking his eyes off the house.
“I just don’t get why we’re doing this,” she continued, whispering. “I mean, we’re allowed to just go in and question her. And yet we’re trying to get in unseen through the back door.”

“Well,” he muttered, wiping some mud off his shirt. “There’s something about this all that just doesn’t feel right. Just look at the house. There’s dust everywhere and those windows haven’t been cleaned in months. In fact, I don’t think anyone has been inside that house for a long time.”
“Maybe,” Leah sniffed. “Or they just can’t do those things anymore.” That’s a slightly unpleasant thought.

“Let’s go in,” he suggested. They crawled the last metres to the back door, and then got up. Leah softly pushed against the door. It didn’t open. She threw a glance at him, and he nodded.
“Miss Newt, this is the police. Please open the door!” she shouted, while knocking. “Please open the door!” It remained silent.

Leah coughed. “Please look away, will you?” He did as asked. He heard a BANG and when he looked again the door was opened.
“Oops,” Leah said. “The wind must have thrown it open.” He grinned and they both entered the dusty house.

“Miss Newt!” he yelled, and opened a door to the right. It took him to a bedroom that could use some cleaning too. Nowhere was a trace of Felicia Newt, though. He was about to open a second door, when he heard Leah shout.

“I think I found her!” He hurried back into the hallway, and then through an open door. The living room. Leah was kneeling on the ground, next to the sofa. She looked up when he neared.

“This is not good,” she mentioned. “Someone was here before us.” He took another step. Felicia Newt was lying in a puddle of half-dried blood, cold and dead.

“Found something yet?” a voice behind him asked. They were going through all of Felicia’s stuff, which was more than expected.
“Nothing. Looks like whoever killed her also removed anything that could be of use to us.”

“Brilliant. Another day gone to waste.” Leah closed the drawer she’d been going through a minute ago. “I suggest we go back and leave this to the local police.”
“Hm.”
“What hm? I don’t like that expression of yours, it can only mean trouble.”
“I was thinking,” he said while sitting down on the bed.

“That’s new. Did it hurt?” He sighed.
“There’s someone else we can try.”
“Please tell me that person lives close.”
“Well, not exactly.” Leah slammed a second drawer shut.
“We get paid double for any hours we make after work time, right?”
