Oh they tried to. Of the three expansions peddled, the only one worth anything was Special Forces. The other two were initially available as download only due to EA corporate greed in wanting every penny for themselves & not putting them to retail. As a result, very few people took them up, there were very few servers online & they died a quick death.
The other problem with the expansions was that BF2 needed a patch to incorporate each one. They gave the job of patching to the now defunct DICE Canada who proved themselves to be a cross between the Muppet show & the missing link between man & ape. They pretty much couldn't code to save their lives, as proved by the 1.3 patch which caused a lot of people to abandon the game.
If you weren't onboard back then, the patch was released so that you could play the final expansion. It wasn't tested enough before release which resulted in lots of people having their online games ended regularly with the message "There is a problem with your connection". Some people weren't even this lucky. The game that run under 1.21 on their systems wouldn't run under 1.3.
Will BF2 ever get another patch? No, hell will freeze over first. Even it if did, I wouldn't trust DICE not to make the game worse.
All I hope for is that BF3 is coded & supported better. Hopefully, by someone other than DICE who don't seem up to coding FPS's.
