This is true when using the control pads, too! When you're moving, L2 will slow you to a stop (brake) and when you're stationary L2 will reverse your vehicle
.
I know someone who has a G25 for the PlayStation 3, and it works fine with the BurnOut demo, so I imagine that will be true for the full game, too.
