What The Papers Say
Roo must be joking
Sir Alex Ferguson erupted with anger yesterday at the prospect of Wayne Rooney being banned for three games. The furious Manchester United boss knocked reporters' tape recorders to the floor as he thumped a table and labelled as a "disgrace" and a "joke" the possibility the FA will punish Rooney for his Boxing Day clash with Bolton's Tal Ben Haim. Sir Alex claims he is the victim of a witch-hunt and insists it is Ben Haim who should be in trouble for play-acting after crashing to the ground as if punched. "The Bolton player should be up before the FA, not Rooney and it's a disgrace," said Fergie. "Because it's Wayne Rooney and Manchester United, I can understand there being a focus on what happened, but the bigger concern is what the other player did.”

Rio’s the best in the world
Alex Ferguson reckons Rio Ferdinand is the world’s greatest defender — and insists he will only get better. Ferdinand turned in another top-class performance in Manchester United’s 2-0 win over Bolton on Boxing Day. It was United’s 12th clean sheet in 22 games since Ferdinand returned from suspension. And Fergie will be looking for more defensive steel today at Aston Villa. The Old Trafford boss said: “Rio has been in incredible form. He is the best centre-half in the world. You have to remember he is still only 25 and is improving all the time.”

Ramos fee on rise
Arsene Wenger and Alex Ferguson have been told to get a move on if they want to sign Seville’s teenage prodigy Sergio Ramos. The Sun revealed last week how the Arsenal and Manchester United bosses were fighting it out for Spanish football’s latest star. But Jose Maria Ramos, the player’s agent and father, has warned that his son’s buy-out clause is due to rise from £12m to £18m in less than three weeks when he has made 25 appearances for Seville’s first team.

Djordjic moves on
Winger Bojan Djordjic has quit Manchester United for Rangers. The Swede, 22, joins the Scottish club on an initial six-month contract with an option of a further two years. He said: “I always wanted to represent a big club at first-team level. It’s a great opportunity to get my career back on track.” Djordjic spent last season on loan at Sheffield Wednesday, Aarhus and Red Star Belgrade where he played alongside new team-mate Dragan Mladenovic.
